•Federalist criticized John Adams for not being aggressive enough towards France. They want to go to war.
•Southerners sympathize with France, and they criticize because he ruined the peace.
Both sides don’t like him, both sides criticize him.
In the Federalist Party there is a faction called the high Federalist or Juntos. They were controlled by Alexander Hamilton, and he wants war with France.
•Media Hatred: the media will continue to belittle and manipulate the entegrity of the US and John Adams himself.
•how did John Adams/Federalist administration respond to the media hatred ..;
They passed two laws through congress
-the Alien Act gives the president power to expel any foreigner. If you speak negatively you get kicked out
-the sedition act criminalizes criticism of the government. This act targeted the media/newspaper because they are inciting rebellion.
•How did people(democratic/Republicans) respond to the Alien and Sedition Acts?..,.
VA and KY resolutions ...
Jefferson’s Kentucky resolutions : states may nullify unconstitutional federal law
Madison’s Virginia resolution : urge states to protect their citizens from the laws.
•How to fix it all. . .
Send a second envoy to France to gain peace.
• the second envoy to France ruined Adams chance at a second term because it caused the high Federalist to walk out on him as candidate. They chose Pickney (South Carolina) to run for them instead.
The democratic republicans put our Thomas Jefferson and A. Borr (he’s from NY). They want Borr to steel NY from the Federalist.
•Hamilton’s guys ended up voting for Thomas Jefferson
•”Revolution” of 1800 : 1st time in American history where one political party gave up there power for the other political party.
