Shrek is a self-reliant creature who was isolated from the rest of society and was misunderstood for the majority of his life. Shrek would speak his opinions with "words as hard as cannonballs" and knew he was "sure to be misunderstood," but still spoke his mind. While being seen crazy and dangerous, Shrek remained to be independent and continued to live his life the way he intended to despite the opinions of others.

The song "I Won't Back Down" by Tom Petty is heavily influenced by Emerson's essay. Petty states, "I got just one life in a world that keeps pushin' me around but I'll stand my ground and i won't back down." This can be seen in the essay when Emerson states that one should stand their ground in adversity. Emerson explains how one should still speak their mind and remain genuine despite the influences of others, even though you might be misunderstood.

Van Gogh was misunderstood and underappreciated his entire life. During his life, he was seen to be mentally insane, uncontrollable, and unworthy. None of his artwork was recognized as somewhat valuable and only sold one piece in his lifetime. It was not until after his death did people recognize his greatness and value his art.His portraits and landscapes influenced much of modern art.

Pathos: "And we are now men, and must accept in the highest mind the same transcendent destiny; and not pinched in a corner, not cowards fleeing before a revolution, but redeemers and benefactors..."
Emerson instills a sense of courage and heart in the readers. Emerson explains how people should not be cowards and should not be afraid to stand up for change. This makes the audience feel fearless and valiant.
Logos: "Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh. To be great is to be misunderstood."
Emerson points out historical figures to support his claim that to be great is to be misunderstood. By giving example of people that are seen as revolutionary and innovative and were misunderstood, he is able to show how great people who speak their mind and improve the world are misunderstood, and it shouldn't be seen as a flaw.

Ethos: "Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string. Accept the place the divine Providence has found for you; the society of your contemporaries, the connection of events."
Emerson explains that people should live their life they way God intended it to be, freely of negative influences and towards a certain path. By saying God intended for people to live their lives with out care of others and accept what happens to you, he is able to justify hid claim that we should live carelessly and independent.
