“It is the height and quintessence of emotion, of every sort of emotion.” - Amy Lowe

Through books, you can walk through the lives of others. You can experience scenarios that you may never experience in your life. Books are able to bring you into another world and you become emotionally attached to the characters and plot. While reading you will feel happy, sad, frustrated, amused, basically every emotion. This quote resonated with me the most because throughout all the things we have read this year, I think I felt about every emotion. I will connect this main idea through ten pieces of work and explain the way the made me feel.

The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros is about a young girl, Esperanza, who shares her experiences of living in a ghetto neighborhood in Chicago. This book relates to the main idea because while reading this, the reader will feel sympathy because all this little girl wants is a nice house. The reader will be confused; are these experiences Cisneros’ actual experiences or is it all made up? While reading this book you get attached to Esperanza’s life and you wonder how her life ends up.

While reading A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J. Gaines I felt sorrow for Jefferson, Miss Emma, and Grant. Jefferson of course is on death row. He feels like nothing, an animal, not even a human and I could never imagine feeling like that. There are days when I am down, but never to the point that Jefferson was at. I felt sorry he had to live the rest of his life that way. I’m sympathetic for Miss Emma to have to see that, to try and make Jefferson believe he isn’t what anyone said he was. I feel sorry for Grant because he doesn’t want to talk to Jefferson, he doesn’t want to be anywhere near there. I also felt hope for him as well. I hoped that he would truly be happy one day; that he and Vivian would live happy together.

In the short story “Eveline” by James Joyce I felt a yearn for Eveline to leave. I thought that she would, but she ended up staying in the place she hates. This piece relates to the main idea because even though you know this isn’t a true story, you want her to leave. You want her to leave her controlling father and rude coworkers and live a new life. I also felt a sense of familiarity because I have stuck to the “normal” instead of venturing in some cases.

In “A+P” by John Updike I felt many emotions. I felt a little distaste for the main character because of the way he looked and described the girls. I also felt humorous because I am also a cashier, and I also come across customers who look at every item and every price and throw a fit over the smallest things. Lastly, when he tried to impress the girls I felt confused as to why he would lose his job due to an impulsive decision in which he didn't benefit from.

While reading “Girl” by Jamaica Kincaid I just felt confused, very confused. I had little to no clue about who was talking, was it her, was it someone else, or was she repeating what someone else said to her? Did she do all of these things? Did she believe these things? It is very overwhelming as well. She narrator has to remember all of these things.

The poem “Speech to the Young. Speech to the Progress-Toward” by Gwendolyn Brooks is about motivation and I felt both motivation and inspiration while reading this. The motivation came from her saying “Even if you are not ready for day it cannot always be night.” Brooks inspired me to be positive no matter what. The way this poem connects to the main idea is that I am feeling different emotions and am being inspired to persevere through anything. Which can be hard to do sometimes

“My Papa’s Waltz” by Theodore Roethke has an innocence to it and makes me a little sad. There is obviously a young child because his father is teaching him how to Waltz. The child can smell the whiskey on his father’s breath but I don’t think he knows his crazy dance moves are being caused by his drunkenness. I felt a little sadness towards the situation because I don’t know if the boy understands the situation.

One of the books I’ve read outside of class is The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. The Fault in Our Stars is about two teens, Hazel and Augustus, who fall in love. This was a very popular book that almost everyone had read or heard about. This book supports the main idea because everyone who read it knows you will need a whole box of tissue. This book isn’t like other books. It may have a similar plot, but the end isn’t expected which is why tissues are needed.

“The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins is about a young girl, Katniss, lives in a place where young people fight against 23 other people until there is only one left. I think that “The Hunger Games” supports the main idea because while reading this you can’t think of a place where this happens. To say that literature is the height and quintessence of emotion means you feel strong emotion while reading. What I felt while reading this was disgust for there even being an idea as bad as this one.

This song has a very powerful message about suicide. This is an example of the main idea because when you listen to this, you feel sympathy for all the people who are thinking about killing themselves. After this song came out the calls to the Suicide Prevention Hotline increased 50 percent. A lot of people have decided not to commit suicide because this song was so powerful to them.

In the poem “Those Winter Sundays” by Robert Hayden you can connect the main idea through what the father does. The father gets up in the cold to warm the house and get things ready for when the family wakes. You can feel thankful while reading this because the father does what few want to do. I read this and thought of the things I am thankful for and the things taken for granted. These reason connect to the main idea because of the feeling you have after or during reading this.

It was so easy easy to read but even with the easy word choice, it still made you think. I questioned whether Sandra Cisneros was portraying herself through Esperanza, and does Esperanza ever get her own room in her own house? I liked this book the best because it wasn’t like other books. It was easy to read and wasn’t like anything I’d ever read before.
