I feel as though Paz placed the bodies face to face because he wanted to showcase the contrast in a way that actually showcases alikeness. I saw this most in the first stanza. The stanza reads: "Two bodies face to face are at times two waves and night is an ocean." By putting things face to face we're able to see how different they are. But, we're also able to see how connected two "faces" can be. At times, two waves and at night, an ocean. Waves and oceans go hand in hand, this could be signifying the two faces also go hand in hand.

"Two bodies face to face are at times two roots laced into night." I feel as though this metaphor is talking about a relationship. It's talking about two people who are laced together into night and potentially forever.

"Two bodies face to face are two stars falling into an empty sky." I feel as though this metaphor is talking about starting a relationship and not knowing how it's going to go. It's talking about the absence of certainty and the presence of the unknown.

The two bodies represent two people in a relationship. In a more literal sense, they could be two lovers facing each other in bed. In this context, it fits better with certain metaphors, like when the speaker compares the two bodies to roots intertwined together. Sometimes they clash, sometimes they're calm and cooperative. Sometimes they are the same, sometimes different in every single way. It shows the differences between human beings and how those differences interact and mesh together

Sometimes they clash and fight, illuminating the night, or the world around them.

“Two bodies face to face

are two stars falling

in an empty sky.”

This metaphor could represent falling in love and how mysterious and scary it could be. Unlike the other metaphors, where there were distinct environments, this stanza just has an empty sky, exciting and intriguing, like love. Love is often compared to oblivion, an oblivion people fall into helplessly. It is a mystery, an enigma. That’s why the speaker doesn’t give a clear environment other than an empty sky.

In “Two Bodies, the speaker uses metaphors to show the aspects of the relationship, accompanied by nature. In the first stanza she compares the two people with waves and oceans to emphasize them being in sync with one another. However, these lines also suggest that not all relationships are harmonious as they seem. The metaphor of two stones in the desert expresses the idea of separation between the two humans. The stones are together but isolated from a world of disregard. The last stanza explains the bond the couple possesses through the beauty and vibrance of stars, but it also contradicts that thought by using the words ‘falling stars.’ Falling stars are slowly burning out, thus the metaphor symbolizes the couple’s mortality.

The speaker utilizes figurative language in these lines by providing a visual imagery of how close this relationship is. For instance, the speaker intentionally connects the two waves into an ocean and two roots laced into one. By doing this, the speaker is essentially showing how these two bodies come to one together

The speaker places the bodies face to face because they want the two faces to be a symbolization. They symbolize that it’s them against the world. It often just says it’s “at time two… and night…”. I think it means that it’s these two people and everyone else, they know they’re there but, they don’t acknowledge them.

“Two stars falling in an empty sky.”- this is the last stanza that the speaker says and personally, I think that it’s the most powerful. The two stars are the two people together (possibly in-love) and the empty sky is the rest of the world and how they feel that it’s just them two.
“Two waves and night is an ocean”- They are two separate people (waves) who are with each other and clashing with each other constantly and they help form an ocean when joining together with the rest of the world, together but, constantly clashing.

They are together but within the world they are very alone. "Two bodies face to face are at times two waves and night is an ocean." This quote explains how their relationship is calm and happy, because usually waves can be calm at night. However, relationships can sometimes get out of hand and turn into what we might say as violent waves. Sometimes relationships can be good and sometimes bad, but as long as the relationship is a healthy one.

The first metaphor the Paz uses is, "two waves and night is an ocean." This suggest about the world is that without night and darkness, there would be no ocean or planet. Even when it is night and you can't see the waves they are still there and the ocean is still there. This can be connected to relationships by even when you aren't with your partner or going through a rough patch, you guys are still together and the relationship still exist. The second metaphor he uses is, " two bodies face to face are two stars falling in an empty sky." In a relationship it just two people, no one else is in the relationship and shouldn't be able to effect it. Like an empty sky they are alone without another star to interfere with them.

He describes her relationship using nature. “Two stars falling in an empty sky” tells us that when the two people are together they are drifting in their own world and forgetting about everything else because when they are together they are just focused on each other. The universe has no meaning to them and the world won’t affect them. “Times two waves and night is an ocean.” The two people can be fighting and arguing, but in the end they are meant for each other and they stay together. The waves can be how the world is against them and the ocean would be how the world doesn’t affect them and they are calm and at peace.

The reason for Octavio Paz placing two bodies facing each other is to use them in the forms of metaphors. A quote that shows this is, “Two bodies face to face are two stars falling in an empty sky”. This quote compares the two bodies to the beauty of shining, bright stars. However, once those stars fall from the sky, it begins to loses its bright ray of colors. This symbolizes that humans are incapable of immorality, no matter how much they want to stay and live together. There will be a time within the relationship when someone has to say goodbye. In each stanza of the this poem, the two bodies facing each other are a representation of what Paz is trying to compare and contrast between human relationships and reality.

They can be apart sometimes but will eventually come back together. Another example is “are at times two roots laced into night.” This could symbolize the bond between two people and how strong that connection is.

One of the stanzas that stood out to me was, “Two bodies face to face are at times two waves and night in and ocean”. The calming waves in the ocean suggests that the beginning of a relationship starts of slowly and smoothly, but as the days go by, those calm waves begin to convert into crashing storm waves. In the end, people realize that there is no such thing as a perfect relationship. The second stanzas out to me was, “Two bodies face to face are sometimes two stones and the night a desert”. The two separate stones are representing the two separate bodies. They are physically together but exist in a universe that ignores them. In other worlds,

One of the different metaphors used in all four stanzas were: "Two bodies face to face are at times two stones and night a desert". This quote shows that the two bodies are characterized as still at the nighttime. meaning to say, even though they are so far apart, they will always be together no matter the circumstance. Another metaphor I want to point out is: " Two bodies face to face are two stars falling in an empty sky." This quote shows how the two bodies are drifting apart form each other. they felt like they were together up in the sky, but then their relationship may not be as perfect as it was before, and somehow it became broken.

The metaphor is suggesting that the relationship will not last forever because like shooting stars, it only lasts for a brief time. The empty sky describes how the end of the relationship won’t really affect the two bodies; it can also represent how the sky doesn’t have an important meaning.

“Two bodies face to face are at times two knives and knives and night strikes sparks.”

The metaphor suggests that when there is conflicts between the two bodies spark heated moments such as moments of confronting each other.

The metaphor of two stones in a desert suggests that the two human beings are separate but they are physically together but exist in a universe that ignores them
