He began working as an artists apprentice at 13 during the early center of the Renaissance movement. From 1490-1492 he lived in the Medici palace, where he was a student of the sculptor Bertoldo di Giovanni and studied the Medici art collection, which included ancient Roman statuary. After the explusion of the Medici family in 1494, Michelangelo traveled to Bologna and Rome, where he was commissioned to do several works including Pieta. After the success of Pieta, he was commissioned to do many other projects like David, a mural for Florence city hall, and the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
