Teachers should work to bridge the gap between a student's home culture and school culture. As suggested within the text, students often have to choose their culture or academic success. However, we can create a culturally responsive classroom where instruction is provided in a manner that does not create such a choice. Teachers can create a culturally responsive classroom by embracing the diversity apparent within it. I teach Hispanic English Language Learners in my second-grade classroom. A way to incorporate their home culture into their school culture would be making an intentional effort to greet these students in Spanish to work towards bridging the gap between home and school.

During class discussions, teachers should make sure they are calling on language-minority students as much as they are calling on language-majority students. The more active the students are in discussions will allow the teacher to see who really understands the skills being taught. If the teacher is only calling on certain students each time when asking questions or having discussions, the teacher cannot fully observe if all students are understanding the concept being taught.

A great way to provide instruction in multicultural education is to provide opportunities to analyze all perspectives of individuals, countries, or groups involved in the event or historical occurrence. This would allow children to gain a deeper understanding and truly divulge themselves into the viewpoints of those involved and why such decisions or events occurred.

When teaching any social studies concepts, include multiple viewpoints. This can take extra planning but being intentional to include multiple viewpoints can help students feel included no matter what their background is. In upper grades, showing students that there are multiple sides to every story can better prepare them for appreciating others' differences in opinions instead of feeling polarized or disconnected when they think different than their peers.

Be a warm demander. Show students in countless ways that you care about them, and show them that you will expect nothing less than their best behavior and diligent academic work. Be kind, build relationships with students, and demand that they learn. “Relentlessly insist that students treat the teacher and one another respectfully and that they complete the academic tasks necessary for successful futures (Bondy & Ross, 2008, p. 55).”

I do this in my classroom by making myself accountable to my students. If I tell them I am going to do something, like bring them a treat for working hard on the Milestone test last week, I make sure to bring them a treat before the end of the week. I actually did this last week. The kids reminded me or asked about the treat every day until I brought it. My students need to see me following through and doing what I say I will do. This builds our relationship and provides an experience to build on.
