         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>motivation: </strong>a need or desire that directs behavior<br><strong>incentive theory: </strong>positive and negative environmental stimuli that motivate behavior<br><strong>physiological vs psychological:</strong><br>hunger drives us to eat<br>fatigue drives us to rest<br><strong>Drive Reduction Theory: </strong>a physical need that creates a drive to satisfy the need<br>ex: money reduces other drives such as hunger because you now have money to buy food<br><strong>Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs:</strong> pyramid of human needs, each need must be met successfully to move up; ends with self actualization<br><strong>Hunger Drive/Weight Disorders:</strong> both internal and external reasons for hunger (anorexia, bulimia, and obesity)<br><strong>Thirst Drive: </strong>reduction of fluid in and outside of cell caused by sodium<br><strong>Lateral Hypothalamus: </strong>causes you to feel hunger<br><strong>Ventromedial Hypothalamus:</strong> causes you to feel full<br><strong>Sexual Response Cycle: </strong>four stages of&nbsp; sexual responding- excitement plateau, orgasm, resolution<br><strong>Psychology of Sex- </strong>what motivates sex? men and women respond to the same stimuli<br><strong>Sexual Disorders- </strong>problems that consistently impair sexual functioning<br><strong>Sexual Orientation- </strong>sexual attraction to members of a particular gender <br>heterosexual:attraction to different gender<br>homosexual:attraction to same gender<br><strong>Need to Belong:</strong> Harlow; we need people, we have a need for acceptance, we will change our actions to fit in with certain groups<br><strong>Achievement Motivation: </strong>desire for significant accomplishment<br><strong>-Extrinsic: </strong>Desire to perform a behavior for reward or to avoid punishment<br><strong>-Intrinsic: </strong>Desire to perform a behavior for your own sake<br><strong>Leadership Styles:</strong><br>Task vs Social<br>-Task-Focuses on goals, sets standards (dictator)<br>-Social- Mediates conflict, builds teamwork (democratic)<br>Theory X vs Theory Y<br>-X- constant monitoring of workers, hovers<br>-Y- Intrinsic motivation, share control<br>Industrial Organizational Psych,- Studies how managers can best enhance the workplace</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Conflict Motivation: </strong>sometimes what you want to do in a situation is clear to you, but at other times you no doubt find yourself conflicted about what choice to make<br><strong>Approach-approach conflict:</strong> occurs when you must choose between two desirable outcomes<br>Ex. Going to a party with your friends on New Year's or spending New Year's with your family<br><strong>Avoidance-avoidance outcome:</strong> occurs when you must choose between two unattractive outcomes<br>Ex. Doing homework or going to the gym to work out<br><strong>Approach-avoidance: </strong>exists when ONE event of goal has both attractive and unattractive features<br>Ex. you love cotton candy but the sugar bothers your stomach<br><strong>Multiple approach-avoidance conflicts:</strong> here you must choose between two or more things, each of which has both desirable and undesirable features (both sides have pros and cons to each)<br><strong>James-Lange Theory:</strong> the arousal comes before the emotion (pounding hear...fear)<br>stimulus-physical change-emotion<br><strong>Cannon-Bard Theory: </strong>the arousal comes at the same times as the emotion<br>stimulus--emotion &amp; physical change<br><strong>Schachter-Singer Theory:</strong> arousal paired with a cognitive label, then the emotion<br>stimulus---cognitive label &amp; physical change---emotion<br><strong>Opponent Process Theory:</strong> emotions are in pairs (fear/relief; pleasure/pain; depression/elation)---similar to color theory for sight<br>-can not feel both at the same time<br>6 Basic Emotions: Joy, Anger, Disgust, Surprise, Sadness, Fear<br><br><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Izard Theory:</strong> 10 basic emotions, cross-cultural, present in infancy, all other emotions are a combination of the original 10. 6 basic are joy, anger, disgust, surprise, sadness, fear<br><strong>Ekman's Theory:</strong> Facial muscles are used to indicate emotion and are universal<br>Duchenne- genuine smile<br><br><strong>Learned Motives</strong><br>-Form of Social Motives but Learned through Modeling/Observation of Others<br><br>1. Aggression<br>&nbsp; a. intent to inflict harm or pain<br>&nbsp; b. connnection to learned helplessness<br><br>2. Achievement<br>&nbsp; a. need to excel or overcome obstacles<br>&nbsp; b. highly motivated children and upbringing, "Early Independence &amp; Encourgament"<br>&nbsp; c. Emotional &amp; Cognitive roots<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;w/ future achievement<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;w/ birth order<br>&nbsp; &nbsp;w/ creativity<br><br><strong>Primary Drive:</strong> hunger<br><strong>Secondary Drive:</strong> your friends bring in sweets and you eat them even though you are not hungry<br><br><strong>Stimulus Motives</strong><br>-unlearned motives that encourage exploration of the world<br>-(used to obtain information on the World...even when bored!)<br>-what do you ponder?<br>-what is your activity level?<br><br><br></div>]]></description>
