Vietnamization was the US policy of withdrawing its troops and transferring all military responsibilities to South Vietnam. This was a way to shift the burden of fighting in the war. The goal was to train and equip the South Vietnam military with enough resources to takeover the fighting. This policy aimed to reduce American casualties and allow for a negotiated end to the war.

The Selective Service System conducted two lottery drawings during the time. This was in response to widespread protests and criticism of the military draft during the Vietnam War. The draft lottery randomly assigned numbers to eligible young men based on their birthdates. These numbers determined the order in which they would be called to serve in the military. The lottery system led to increased opposition to the war, with many individuals, known as "draft dodgers," avoiding the draft through various means, such as seeking student deferments, fleeing to Canada, or conscientious objection.
