The main American fighting force was the continental army. Early in the war, soldiers wore long, brown coats. But by 1779 most wore blue. U.S. marines wore green jackets.

Many soldiers wore a three-sided tricorn hat. Others wore cocked hats, with one part of the hat pinned up. Soldiers turned their cocked hats so the float side faced their shooting arms. Wearing a hat this way made sure it wasn’t in the way when the soldier fired his/her gun.

They eventually retreated and regrouped for another assault. On the night of June 16, colonial Prescott led 1,200 men onto the peninsula and start to build their positions. They intended to build on the larger and better known bunker hill. However they quickly decided to move their work to breeds hill, which was lower but closer to Boston. They built a long, protective wall that was 6 feet (2 meters) tall and had wooden platforms.
