His wife was the Nereid Amphitrite. Poseidon chose to control the domain of the sea. However, he was never satisfied with the sea alone and often interfered with the plans of Zeus or Hades. He even attempted to overthrow Hades for control of the Underworld. For punishment for the treachery of the attempt on overtaking his brother, Poseidon was sent to build the walls of Troy.

He was acknowledged as the ruler and respected for his control over the seas (mostly mediterranean). Physically, he resembles his brother Zeus.
