Hunger strike was used as a way of demonstration for many suffragettes, after they were sentenced to long sentences for minor offences such as protesting, resisting arrest, or smashing a window. However, after the Cat and the Mouse act of 1913 (which theoretically was issued to solve this problem), many women were forced to eat. An important Lady (Lady Constance Lytton) disguised as a poor women to gather evidence of this fact. The next statement was collected: "Lytton was held down by wardresses as the doctor inserted a four-foot-long tube down her throat. A few seconds after the tube was down, she vomitted all over her hair, her clothes and the wall, yet the task continued until all the liquid had been emptied into her stomach. As the doctor left ‘he gave me a slap on the cheek". After it was found out that she was an important lady in the city, this activity was forbidden to be carried out to women.

Not all the suffragettes were white women. Black women were also involved in this movement. There were many women living in the UK that were born in Africa or India. So, basically, they were treated worse than white women.

On 1910 ( November 18 ) more than 300 women did a demonstration in front of the Houses of Parliament, because they wanted the right of the vote. A lot of these women were black women, who also complained for the way that the were treated. This day is known as the “Black Friday”.

This day has this name because the Metropolitan Police exercised a lot of violence against these women.
Two suffragettes were killed during this day. Emmeline Pankhurst sister, Mary Clarke, was there during the demonstration, and she saw everything that the police did.

The Cat and Mouse Act was done to try to stop the suffragettes from becoming martyrs.
The prisoners, rather than being fed-force in the prison, weren't to then be released once they became extremely weak to prevent them dying in custody. This effectively allowed the government to claim that it was not responsible for any harm or death.
During the recovery period, any law-breaking by the part of the suffragette would put them straight back in prison. The time spent out of prison recovering was not counted as time making prison sentences. Once recovered, they would be returned to prison to continue their sentence. This meant that suffragettes could be repeatedly released and imprisoned.

Àlex Bermúdez Rodríguez
