I can enhance my health in many different ways. But here are a few ways that I would like to improve on. In the first chapter it mentions the top three causes of death. These three include, "1.) Heart disease, 2.) Cancer, and 3.) Chronic Lower Respiratory Disease" (Healthy Practices and Behaviors, 2). There are ways that I could reduce my risk of dying from one of these types of top three deaths. I could work on a few of these to get healthier and reduce my risk, "1.) Quit smoking, or don't start, 2.) Eat fewer high-fat foods and more fruits and vegetables, and 3.) Be more physically active" (Healthy Practices and Behaviors, 3). I know that I will never smoke because I already know what it does to a person. I have asthma and it is already hard to enough to breath and smoking would only make it harder. Secondly, I should find a way to get more active, especially in the winter, but really all year round. I should also try to eat less and choose more healthy options. I know I should never choose alcohol, tobacco or drugs because, they will, eventually, effect everyone in a negative way. Alcohol reduces someones reaction time my effecting their brain, "Alcohol overdose causes even more severe depressant effects (inability to feel pain, toxicity where the body vomits the poison, and finally unconsciousness, or worse, coma or death from severe toxic overdose)” (Dangers of Alcohol, Tobacco, Opiates and Other Drugs, 5). Many people in my grade cannot wait until they are 21 so that they can drink. but I am not one of them. Many shows on T.V. today show drinking and I think that it has an influence on the young viewers watching. There are already some people in my school using drugs and alcohol and it will effect them for life. Some people know that it was a mistake to start using drugs and alcohol and they want to quit. But at the same time it is hard for them to quit because of the addictive nature of these drugs. They can take medication to help them from the withdraws that they will have when they stop. They could also use a rehab treatment that will help them gain skills that will help them make healthier choices. These treatments are behavioral treatments. There is one final way that I could increase my health. I could safely use dietary supplements. The benefits of using these supplements are, “Today's dietary supplements include vitamins, minerals, herbals and botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and many other products” (Food Sources and Nutrition, 11). These can help a person get some of the dietary supplements that they are missing in their everyday meals. But there are also some risks that come with this. These risks can include, “Supplements are most likely to cause side effects or harm when people take them instead of prescribed medicines or when people take many supplements in combination” (Food Sources and Nutrition, 11). When I take my vitamins I am going to look at the label to make sure that it will not mix with my other medication in a bad way. All of these things can work on to help increase my heath and help teach me long lasting healthy skills.
