The use of character traits help develop the plot of the novel by showing his character traits through actions and responses. The author states,"He looked at me, and he looked at the pile of coins...Where did you get all this? I told you, Grandpa," I said, "I was saving my money so I could buy two hound pups, and I did. How long have you been saving this?... Two years." This quote shows that Billy has determination to get the two hound pups. This effects the novel because if it wasn't for his determination the novel wouldn't be about the dogs.
