Throughout the story, Rey makes four choices. If I was (were) in Rey's shoes, I will (would) have some similar actions.
If I was (were)  Rey, I would help Mr. Sánchez with some yard work when he first promises (promised)  that we would (could) use the swimming pool. Mrs.Sanchez didn’t keep his words.
After that, Mr.Sánchez promises (promised) some snacks. I would still help him clean up a yard across the street from his house. And we actually did get some snacks. But only one bottle of cola and one bag of chips.
I would trust Mr. Sánchez one more time and dug the holes for the basketball stand. Because there is a Chinese proverb says that nothing is more than three times. However, Mr. Sánchez gets (got) angry with us while we use (used) it during he is not at home (when he was not at home). Even if I wanted to believe him again, my friends would not believe him again.
And the last time, I'm going to (would)  make the same choice as Rey. Not for my father, but for humanity.
