TRADITIONAL WATER CONSERVATION SYSTEM 

1) PANAM KENI
The kuruma tribe (a native tribe of wayanad) uses  a special type of well called the panam keni  to store water. 
Wooden cylinders are made by soaking the stems of toddy palms in water for a long time so that the core rots away until only the hard outer layer remains. 
These cylinders  four feet in diameter as well as depth  are then immersed in groundwater spring located in fields and forest.

Odisha has come up with more than 10,000 rainwater harvesting structures (RWHS) to facilitate water conservation and groundwater recharge in 114 towns in less than three-month time before onset of south-west monsoon. 
A State-wide campaign on the theme ‘Catch the Rain: Where it Falls and When it Falls’ was launched on April 15 across all urban local bodies under Mukhyamantri Karma Tatpara Abhiyan Yojana (MUKTA), an urban wage employment scheme for migrant labourers. 
The Housing and Urban Development (HUD) department has selected 15,000 sites for RWHS. “As of now 10,176 RWHS have been completed. The department expected to achieve the figure of 12,000 by July 10,”

1. Kul- Kuls are that carry water from one glacier to another.
From 10 km long Kuls have been around for centuries.They go through Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh and in Jammu too.Kul starts at the glacier, which is to be tapped. Keeping the head clear of debris is achieved by lining the sides of Kul with stones which ensure that there is no seepage or clogging.

2. Johads- Alwar district of Rajasthan is one of the driest regions in India with water scarcity. After the drought of 1980's villagers attempted to revive water. Johad, a crescent shaped small check dam built from earth and rock to intercept and conserve rainwater, was thus reinvented.

Odisha is also known as Orisa. It is an eastern part of India on the Bay of Bengal. It is known for its tribal culture and many temples. Odisha is counted as one of the prone flood states in India. It had many floods and cyclones in the past. Some were devastating. Odisha has rivers such as mahanadi,Subarnarekha, Brahmani, Baitarani, Rushikulya, Vansadhara and their many tributaries. 

The villagers renovated instead of building new wells. Thus, they invested less and gained more. Most of these were privately owned .But the rules were developed in each village. 
The owners had to share the water of their wells to their neighbours. 

Everyone has agreed that everyone would have equal access to water because of the increase of water level in the wells.
