The way people are gathered near coastlines affects both the oceans and society in big ways. The seas give us many things like food, safety for our shores, and even help us feel better mentally, but they can also bring problems like natural disasters. Meanwhile, people have an impact on how healthy the oceans are. This happens through building along the coast or taking care of the environment. Since the health of the ocean and people are closely connected, we need to encourage the good relationships between them while reducing the bad ones.

The ocean acts as a global climate control system: it regulates the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere by absorbing, storing and releasing the greenhouse gas in a variety of ways and places, thereby affecting Earth's climate. In fact, the ocean is an enormous storehouse for carbon, containing 50 times more than the atmosphere. But it takes time for carbon, in the form of CO2, to make its way into the deep ocean: so far the ocean has taken up about 30 percent of all CO2 emissions from human activities in the past 200 years, but eventually it will absorb much more.

A group of scientists say that oil pollution in the ocean is gradually causing marine life to become resistant to petroleum hydrocarbons. In other words, some fish survive the oil, but if someone catches and eats them, they will end up contaminated with oil, which poses a risk to human health.
