Math Dept Live Hour Brainstorm by Bridget Lopez

Throughout orientation, kids have been very engaged in synchronous live sessions, and seem to be longing for person-to-person interaction. We aren't looking to completely reinvent the wheel and will be proceeding with the 10-11 am time slot for office hours across the board, but we are looking to brainstorm ways to maximize student engagement and attendance during the remaining time in our content days (excluding 2-3pm, which will be reserved for advisory).

Please note that as part of our revised attendance policy, in order to be marked present for your class, a student must do one of the following: a) attend a synchronous session, b) submit their daily content work by 11:59 pm that day, or c) receive direct individual support via email or phone communication from the teacher.

If you have any ideas about what "maximizing student attendance and engagement" can look like across our departments, please post them here, and feel free to comment on or upvote your colleagues' responses.

To maximize attendance, office hours should be just at least 1 hour later. 10-11am places us in a the same position we were last term with advisory where attendance suffered because children where not awake yet.

WE can also use sometime of calendar system, like calendly.com where students select their support time and hours to meet with their teachers on their content days. So if they can not attend the 10-11 am hours they can at least schedule individual time on their on behalf. I believe grimes suggested this. Think its great.

Clarifying LIVE Hours

First of all, thank you for clarifying about the 10 AM-11 AM time slot because I did have a question about that when I approached Milbrand about this. I can definitely make that adjustment to my schedule if this is going to be the case moving forward.

Having said this, I believe that 10 AM-11 AM office hours is not sufficient in my case because I teach three different math content classes. It will be very difficult to address students' questions and needs from three completely different math content classes during that one hour time slot. Also, it would also be completely unfair to the students to be in a Google Meet or Zoom to vie for my attention with three highly specific math questions.

I may be a decent math teacher but switching my brain among AP Calc, AP Stats, and Pre-Calc in that one hour time frame is challenging at best.

Because of my particular special case of teaching three different math content areas, I would request that I can still do the 10 AM-11 AM office hours as mandated by Leadership. However, I would like to add specific LIVE Hours during Math Day for each of my classes (like how I have it set up right now) so there is an opportunity for more individualized class-by-class instruction that happens later in the day when students would most likely be more active participants when they have fully woken up and knowing that all their classmates are together with them.

With co-teachers, one could take the "mandatory 10-11am" time slot while the other takes a later time. This would give students the opportunity to log in and still get helped should they, for any reason, not make it to the 10am time slot. As Zayra said, the 10am time slot hindered advisory last semester.

Last idea promise! Why don't we have other departments do what Math will be doing, which is have two submissions of work on that content day. Since attendance is now due by COB that 11:59 pm deadline makes it hard for teachers. So, if everyone has that NOON submission of some part of the assignment like guided practice that could help with that attendance we need.

One hour is not enough time for the number of students most of us have on our content day.

What we can do is shift live hours and possibly even split them to accommodate the maximum number of students - for example, perhaps 10-11 and then 1-2 on Tuesdays for content day.

I suspect students are already going to struggle coming on time, but 1 hour in the morning is a recipe for disaster. Either too many students will show up and all questions will be unanswered, or too few students will show up and it will double teacher workload when you have to then schedule various 1:1s.

The 10-11am office hours are NOT mandatory for students? Is it similar to last year where if students had questions or needed help they would attend. If a student understood the assignment then they did not have to attend ??

Because if it is mandatory then its not realistic. We would need two different office hours. Maybe one at 10-11am and another one from 1-2pm.

We have 2 diff live sessions for our students to attend and we send the calendar invite based on the students preference (
each student can confirm if they prefer 10-11 or 1-2). We state that our expectation is for them to attend live session for at least 15 minutes of synchronous learning and within that time each teacher can choose to do Guided Practice or Student Discourse. Students need to interact with their peers but also share ideas and thoughts about the topic; they learn best from each other with support from their teacher. Those that attend we can reward with less workshop questions to complete. I think the school should also take into consideration that some students have siblings they are supporting with their own school work and those sessions are primarily held in the morning. These students may benefit from a later live session. It would allow them to focus on their own work and be present with their peers.

I think to accommodate all the check-ins (which is where much of the teaching will occur), we need to move towards small-group check-ins in addition to 1-on-1s. That's the only way it will be efficient for students who weren't able to learn everything from the asynchronous lesson. Hopefully those lessons will be enough for many kids, but I feel like many will need live explanation and Q&A, and it will likely be too many to get to everyone with 1-on-1s. So, small group session with similar-ability students might be the key to answering everyone's questions.

From reading all these wonderful comments and thoughts, I propose that IF leadership still want the office hours for each teacher then there should be two time slots that we can choose (either 10-11 or 1-2). These times can be reserved for our student check-ins in an as-needed basis.

Additionally, teachers can have the autonomy to create their own schedule on Tuesdays based on their overall class specific needs and to accommodate their own schedules during the day. As an example, I will conduct office hours from 10-11 for any student that needs it (especially for early morning students which surprisingly I have). Then, I break up my LIVE Hours by class on Tuesday afternoons so that the questions are more targeted and specific for that class. (This was how I set it up last Spring and this year as well. Students in my LIVE Hours this past Tuesday attended, participated, and were very engaged.)
