Oedpios complex is a term used by Sigmund Freud, in his theory about stages of psychosexual development. To describe a child's feelings of desire for his or her opposite-sex parent and jealousy and anger toward his or her same-sex parent.

The deepest regions of the mind the main emotion being sexual desire and more specifically the sexual desire you have to either your mom or dad (son is attracted to the mother and daughter to the farther). The Oedipus Complex is quite evident in the film Halloween (1978) and its much more than just your run of the mill slasher, its actually full of hidden psychoanalytical meanings. 

Signs of Oedipus Complex
  • a boy expressing possessiveness of his mother and telling his father not to hug or kiss his mom. 
  • Little girls at this age may declare that they plan to marry their fathers when they grow up.

Sigmund Freud named the complex after the character in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex who accidentally kills his father and marries his mother. In the greek myth oedipus rex is abandoned at birth and it is only after he had killed his father and married his mother that he learns their true identities.

The electra complex
The stage when girls feel desire for their father, and jealousy of their mother is called the electra complex. The term was introduced  to describe how this complex manifests in girls.

Resolution
Freud suggested that boys who do not deal with this conflict effectively become “mother-fixated” and girls become “father-fixated”. As an adult you will find a partner who look or reminds of your opposite sex parent.

Definition and facts:
  • The Electra Complex is a psychoanalytic term, which describes the Oedipus complex of a woman. It is a girls instinctive sexual attraction towards her father and her corresponding hate to her mother. 
  • Electra complex is the fight between a daughter and her mom, where they fight for the dad’s attention
  • It is comparable to the male Oedipus complex.
  • A female is initially attached to the mom from birth, but when she finds out she doesn’t have a penis, she becomes attached to her father.
  • While the term Electra complex is frequently associated with Freud, it was actually Carl Jung who coined the term in 1913.
  • Background →  The term itself is derived from the Greek myth of Electra and her brother Orestes, who plotted the death of their mother for revenge of their father's murder.

The stages of the electra complex:
  1. First stage: being attracted to the mother. 
  • At 3 or 4 years old, the girl stops having such attraction to her mother and begins showing attraction towards her dad.
  1. Second stage: being attracted to the father
  • When the girl reaches 6 or 7 years old, she will again feel the need for closeness and identification with the mother.

The Oedipus complex:
  • Freud described the Oedipal complex as a boy's longing for his mother and competition with his father. 
  • The boy possesses an unconscious desire to replace his father as his mother's sexual partner, thus leading to a rivalry between son and father.
  • At the same time the boy also has a fear that his father will discover these desires and castrate him out of punishment. 
  • To resolve this anxiety, the boy instead begins to identify with his father and develop a desire to be more like his father
