Bilingual Education Act (1968)

The Bilingual Education Act (1968) known as Title VII of Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) was passed to support a population of diverse students. The act was created to help students however it wasn't until 1974 when the definitions of the bill changed.
In 1974, the understanding of bilingual education became clearer and schools received grants to include teaching in the students home language. This act has been reevaluated but is important in educating all students. Throughout time this act had gone through many changes and in 1981 Regan decided that using the native language was wrong and it will delay individuals from speaking English. I think it is important to implement students native language into learning because that is their language and it is important to help continue it on. This act is important because it has influenced the education system today.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed to take action against racial discrimination and promote equal rights for all citizens. This act was created to get rid of segregation in schools and public facilities. This event was crucial in supporting Bilingual Education today because it created opportunity for all to attend school with equal rights. This act created change and lessened the negative view towards ethnic languages. The importance of this act and bilingual education today is that everyone became equal which created out schooling today. Without this act, the world would be segregated and learning opportunities would be unfair.

The National Defense Education Act (1958)

The National Defense Education Act brought instruction of foreign language into elementary schools, high schools and universities. By bringing foreign language education into schools, more individuals became involved in other languages and the view of language speaking started to have a more positive view. Individuals became more involved in learning about others and the different languages. This event was so important in history because it helped spark an interest in learning about other cultures in America. The act did not address bilingual education but was important to Bilingual Education because it supported the usage of foreign language and educated people.

No Child Left Behind (2001)

The No Child Left Behind act of 2001 was created to ensure that all students learned to read and write in English. The act required states to be taught by highly qualified teachers. The No Child Left Behind act help schools accountable for academic performance and English Language development of students who spoke limited English. All limited English proficient students were tested in grades 3-8 on both mathematics and reading to measure the progress of learning.
I feel that the act itself was not beneficial to students who did not speak English but was important because it showed the education system and state what did not work. Unfortunately students had to face the challenges of this act but it importantly has helped shape the Bilingual Education in todays day. I do not agree with the assessments used to measure the progress of learning and feel as if students lack proper support.

Every Student Succeeds Act (2015)

In December of 2015, the Every Student Succeeds Act was passed. This act was created and changed based on the negatives of the No Child Left Behind Act. The progress of Enlightenment Language Learners was tracked in a separate subgroup. ELL students are still required to take the ELA and Math assessments no matter how long they have been in the United States. By tracking the progress of ELL students, the Every Student Succeeds Act removed the requirements that teacher evaluations be tied to ELL students test scores.
This act has an influence on Bilingual Education today and I believe it has room for improvement. The No Child Left Behind act was not implemented properly which is why they created this act. I feel that there is always room for improvement but this act can be reevaluated. Something I would take into consideration is the assessments being given. Both the ELA and math assessments are given to students regardless of how long they have been here. I feel this is unfair because it creates an uncomfortable environment for learners. It is so important that schools are supportive towards learners. The revaluation of the NCLB act had positive impact on education systems but still has room for improvement.
