In 1987, and advocacy group called the Hearing Voices Movement was created by Marius Romme, Sandra Escher and Patsy Hage. Soon after this movement began, an international collective of advocacy groups was born, one of them being the infamous Hearing Voices Network. The movement focused on their human rights, and worked hard to dismiss stereotypes, raise awareness, and create a safe space for those who hear voices, have visions and other similar experiences.

Although, these individuals are seen as a term called "schizophrenic" which has many negative labels and stereotypes associated with it. Those who would hear voices were usually hospitalized, tied up, given drugs unwillingly, thus going against basic human rights. Soon after this movement began, an international collective of advocacy groups was born, one of them being the infamous Hearing Voices Network. Contrary to popular belief, the act of hearing voices does not particularly mean the individual is not in tune with reality. In fact, many who do have these experiences find comfort in their reality. Of course, some do not see this as a positive aspect of their life. They may find the voices threatening, dangerous or even confusing which may even cause the individual to be in harm's way. Due to the different emotions one must consider, It is crucial for the Hearing Voices Network to fight for their rights and allow them to have a voice in how they should address their own experience.

There are thousands of stories that have explained how mentally exhausting it was to not understand themselves or someone close to them who hears voices. With the help of the Hearing Voices Network, these people have been properly educated, comforted and helped without experiencing any injustice as everyone has the option to post anonymously. Unfortunately, the stereotypes for people who hear voices is still connected to negative connotations, which is something the organization has to work harder towards with the help of us citizens. Even though not all of their objectives have been completed, the organization was able to complete the most important objective; giving the victims of this mental illness a place to vent and feel safe doing so. More work has to go into changing the mindset of others who think of them as "crazy" or "psychotic", although the progress the Hearing Voices Network has made is impeccable!

But I’m happy to find out that I’m not the only one and now I feel like I can talk about it to people, thank you." -Ell, 2013
