Spiridon Triptych, 15th Century

This work is a triptych which depicts 3 figures, all of whom are naturalistically rendered. This work lacks the linear perspective of Italian art of this time, as its three figures are positioned in the foreground and the background does not have much depth. The grotesque and monstrous creature to the left is another detail of the Northern European style. This painting is tempura on panel. It is currently in the Louvre.

Anne of Cleves, 1539

This painting by Hans Holbein the younger depicts Henry VIII's fourth wife, the German Anne of Cleves. This work was very likely painted in one sitting, as its purpose was to give Henry an idea of what the woman looked like before he married her. Holbein shows his great attention to detail in the realism of the facial features and the complex patterns and textures of Anne's dress. Allegedly, Henry did not consider Holbein's painting to be lifelike enough, and was disappointed by the real Anne's looks. It is currently in the Louvre.

Self Portrait at 26, Durer

This is the second of 3 self portraits made by Durer. As the name implies, he depicts himself at 26 (the other two are him at ages 13 and 28). He depicts himself as delicate and beautiful, using his art to show off aristocratic grace. The inscription reads "I have thus painted myself. I was 26." Again, Durer demonstrates a consciousness of his image and legacy. He is self-aware, which is common across his work. He also paints a landscape out the window, showing his skill at portraiture and natural painting. This painting is house in the Museo Del Prado in Madrid.
