Standard: Draw a scaled picture graph and a scaled bar graph to represent a data set with several categories. Solve one- and two-step "how many more" and "how many less" problems using information presented in scaled bar graphs.

Essential Question: How can we utilize picture graphs or bar graphs to solve one and two step equations, including but not limited to, how many less or how many more?

Task 1

Teacher to class:

You and a partner will pick a topic or interest (e.g. favorite color, food, sports team), and collect data on each of your classmates to find out their answers.
During this time, I will also create my own question and create my own data that will be used for later.
You and your partner can choose to demonstrate the data on a computer, poster board, and so on.
You and your partner can represent the data by using any scaled visual representation that you would like through a picture graph or bar graph

Now that your data is represented, You and your partner will create your own one-step questions about the data (e.g. How many more? How many less? What is the difference between? How many people voted for X and Y together?)

Task 3

Now you and your partner have represented the data, as well as created questions about the data.
I will now partner you up with another group. You will share your graphs and questions with each other. You and your partners will work together and answer the questions.

Now that you have completed this activity, I will present the data and questions that I created.
Questions (tiered for students)
a. Pick a way to demonstrate the difference between the highest voted sport versus the lowest voted sport.
b. Add 2 votes to any group and tell me how if or how it changes to the question: "How many more votes did the most get compared to the second highest?"
c. Create 1-2, two-step questions about the data.
