I am running an e-safety workshop for parents on Tuesday after school. What one piece of advice should I pass on to parents?

Have open and honest discussions with your children about what they are doing online and how they can keep themselves safe.

It's remarkably easy to download new free apps. Make sure you know exactly what's on your child's phone or tablet

Explain why you want to know what your children are up to- it's not just a case of being nosey!

Understand how and when your child can access the Internet... games consoles, TV boxes etc can often be overlooked!

Model staying safe - think about your own online behaviours, share the things you do to keep a safe and positive online presence.

When I did mine the other week I really stressed the importance of open communication with children on what they are doing online.

A good dialogue is key.

Make sure you set the right example!

Make sure you are demonstrating how to be a positive digital citizen with all the social media platforms you use!

Make sure they understand the boundaries of what is acceptable and set clear guidelines and sanctions, respect will breed respect both ways , openess is paramount

Just talk to them. Tell them that you are not trying to monitor what they are doing to be mean, you are doing it to keep them safe. Be there for them so that they have someone to talk to if they see an internet nasty.

Ask them to teach you something on their device - kids learn how to use this stuff far quicker than you will, and whilst learning from them, ask questions such as "who else would use this?" and "what would i do if someone tried bullying me / sending me hateful messages through this app"? Make THEM aware through stealth!

Don't scare them into thinking you're MI6, you're their parent and keep them safe in the digital world as much as the real one (a little bit matrix) but you're there to talk to if the need arises , don't post or say anything you wouldn't say to a person face to face

Use social media with your children. Involve them in creating posts and model good digital citizenship

I think it's about honesty. Setting your expectations and boundaries high but also making sure they know what to do in any situation. Maybe go through some hypothetical questions with them to put your mind at rest. I've found that children are very aware of the potential dangers and pitfalls of using tech/net. Just don't become a scaremonger!

Ps. I really liked the idea of getting them to show you how to use something. :)

Try and encourage them to use digital technologies with you. It helps open dialogue as well as allowing you (the parent) to see what they are doing online - you might just learn something from them!
