Plate Tectonics represent the features and movement of Earth's surface in the present and the past. These movements create things like earthquakes and volcanoes.

Alfred Wegener founded the theory, which back in the beginning of the 20th century was known as continental drift. The theory was widely accepted in 1960. The main idea of the theory was that the continents were once whole. They thought of this because all the continents could fit perfectly together like pieces of a puzzle. When they are all together, it is called Pangea. Marine geology was developed after the war, which led to the discovery of the subduction process.
