ISSUE: Abuse Of Power

In this book, Mark, the main character in the book is told deadly secrets and evidence by a man named Romey Clifford, also an attorney who is about to commit suicide. The attorney tells Mark where the body of the dead senator is hiding and also mentions the killer's name. The issue starts presenting itself in the book when the FBI and police finally found that that Mark was in the car with the attorney, and conclude that he knows something important and he isn't telling them. So they proceed into pressuring Mark to tell them where the body is, multiple times. They care about nothing, but the truth-which isn't bad, but the way the justice system/authorities go about trying to get the truth out of Mark is wrong and doesn't help at all.

CHARACTER

The character that the author chose for this book was an eleven-year-old boy named Mark. I think Mark is a perfect person to be used to represent this issue because he is just a little boy who doesn't know anything about the law and how it works. In the book, the FBI are the ones with the power which means they can do whatever they want. And then Eleven-year-old Mark kind of represents just regular people with no power in society in a way. And how unfair the Justice system can be unfair to them. At the start Mark is just a normal kid, living a normal life until he got caught up in an issue that could get him killed. After this Mark's life changes a lot because he is being attacked/ pressured by the FBI and also the mafia who are threatening him. This causes him to be scared of the FBI and doesn't trust that they can help him. An example of this is when the FBI really want to get the truth out of Mark. To do this they go to his lawyer's room and looks around for things without permission and also question Mark without the permission of his lawyer or mom. They also try to control him, because they don't really care about him, and his safety "This kid will crack under pressure. First, he's taken into custody by order of the Juvenile Court, same as any other case, and that'll scare the hell out of him.....at that point the kid will crack" pg:260. And that's the issue in this book. They do whatever they want because they have the power to do it. They don't realize that the reason why Mark doesn't want to tell them the truth is that it's going to cost him his life, and put his lawyer in danger too. The FBI doesn't think about this or even try to protect him, or just show some sympathy.

"There was something unfair about a system in which a little kid was brought into a courtroom and surrounded by lawyers arguing and sniping at each other under the scornful eye of a judge, the referee, and somehow in the midst of this barrage of laws and code sections and motions and legal talk the kid was supposed to know what was happening to him. It was hopelessly unfair.”~Reggie Love

How This relates to the World

In the real world, the authorities and just anyone that has the power to do anything would look down on anyone that doesn't have any. They take this advantage to do what they please and care little about the other person involved. An example of this is when Hitler was a leader in Germany. He took advantage of the people, and manipulated them, because he can, and because he wanted to and had the power to do so. Another current event is the police brutality that is still going on. The police are given power. Which isn't bad, but they abuse this power when they disrespect people and punish the people if they "refuse arrest" or just simply refusing to do something. This is disrespectful to the police, but there are better ways to deal with someone disrespectful. I think this issue is worth addressing because everyone deserves to be treated with respect no matter who they are. Power comes with great responsibility and, when it's not used right, it can really cause a disorder. What people can do about this issue is teach authorities how to handle their power, and just teach them their limits. This also needs to be addressed because it happens all over the place, for example, school, work, business and in courts.
