Summary

Prior to the lesson, students learn about parts of the plot, different types of genres, and elements of literature. Once this background knowledge is established, students begin working on their first novel of the year, William Goldman’s The Princess Bride. Rather than reading this large book as a whole group, however, the students will instead complete this book within literature circles. Throughout a 9 week period, students will Jigsaw certain sections of the novel, during which they will need to complete various jobs and give various demonstrations/presentations. The lesson stresses differentiation by allowing students to choose or create different jobs to complete while they read their section of the book. These jobs can include summarizer, note-taker, vocabulary wizard, discussion leader, connection maker, etc. At the end of the reading cycle, students are then tasked with the performance assessment that requires them to present their findings from their section to the class in a manner of their choosing. Students have the freedom to choose from the various types of options. All options were created with authenticity in mind. I wanted students to have an objective that is at least slightly real-world oriented, even if it is writing a newspaper article or "tweet." The most advantageous part of utilizing performance assessments is that the "finished product" can take many different forms, and is up to the student to decide. In the 2006 book A Teacher's Guide to Classroom Assessments, Butler and McNunn (2006) explain, "Using performance assessment methods, student expectations for learning may take a variety of forms and are not limited to the arts" (p. 5). I wanted to provide students with enough choice and freedom during the unit so that they would be able to express what they have learned through a means in which they thought would be most suitable for their learning style.
