“When teaching doesn’t connect to students, it is perceived as not belonging to them” (Edmin, 2016, p.39)

I can relate to this very well! In this picture, the broccoli represents the material being taught to students. The child represents the "students" rejecting the material being taught. When there is a test given, sometimes I automatically announce that it's not my personal test, but my teacher's. If I don't like the material, or has no interest to me, I will try to refuse to to take it, or accept the test and not do by best.

“To be an educator in America today means that your student’s test scores, GPAs, and graduation rates are the primary measures of your effectiveness” (Edmin, 2016, p.37)

This is a picture of a man holding up the world. The world represents students' test scores, graduation rates, and GPAs. The man represents all teachers. These statistics are based off what the teacher has taught, and "mentally given" to his students. Everything that a teacher puts out onto his students, reflects on what they are going to put into their work. You may never know what teacher's words and actions may bring into students lives; which affects their school work.

"Urban youth are typically well aware of the loss, pain, and injustice they experience, but are ill equipped for helping each other through the work of navigating who they truly are and who they are expected to be in a particular place" (Edmin, 2016, p. 24)

There are students who want to build each other up, even though they are all going through different tough situations outside of school. There are also some students who are ill-equipped, meaning not having the resources or abilities to help someone. Students are afraid to help one another, due to the fear of getting personally hurt outside of school. Hopefully one day, all youth can come together and build each other up to help "find themselves" and fell safe and complete. Here is a picture of cheerleaders who helped each other to form a pyramid.

“The reality is that we privilege people who look and act like us, and perceive those who don’t as different and, frequently, inferior.” (Edmin, 2016, p. 19)

This quote means that people tend to "relate" to people more if they have a similar background, race, etc. Some people tend to exclude people out if they can't relate to one another.

"To be in touch with the community, one has to enter into the physical places where the students live, and work to be invited into the emotion-laden spaces the youth inhabit" (Edmin, 2016, p.21)

In order to relate to students, you have to put yourself in their place. You can't, as a teacher, agree with students about certain situations. Teachers have to actually step into "their world".
