Nowadays, people are so caught up with social media especially the younger generation. For a lot of people, social media can be a really great and useful platform to get sources of news or information, to advertise their products, or even just for entertainment purposes. Social media helps us to quickly spread anything to the world such as news or report, and it also can be a place to share our voice or exchange our opinions. However, with so much greatness that it contains, it can also be a dark place. It becomes very easy for people who have bad intentions toward certain people to just spread bad rumors about them. There are so many social media networks available that can potentially be a quiet dark place if we are not using it wisely, and twitter could possibly be one of them.
 
Twitter can be a place for someone to spread negativeness. One of twitter's main features is 'tweet'. By tweeting, you can share what is on your mind at the moment. For example, you want to share what is going on in your day. But unfortunately, some people are getting too comfortable with themself on social media to the point that they may utter opinions or share something that can be labeled as hatred. One of Indonesia’s most famous songwriters and musicians, Ahmad Dhani was reported to the police regarding his tweet back in 2017. Allegedly, Dhani shared his opinion to the public during the election day period, and reportedly it was some kind of hatred towards other participants. It shows that people should not be careless about their actions. They should be more aware and careful, especially on social media where everything could be easily open and accessible.
 
Twitter can also be a place to spread rumors and that could leave people to feel threatened. As we all know, we can share and express our feelings freely on twitter or any other social media. But, it is on the low percentage that those tweets we made will escape from the public opinions. People sometimes can be very mean and judgy to one another. In this case, the tweet was specifically mentioned Roni Eka as The Vice President on one of Indonesia’s most leading airlines, Garuda Indonesia. He was rumored in a scandalous issue that was still not proven right at that time being. People went crazy on twitter because of an account that allegedly exposed and defamed him. He felt threatened by people’s tweets and he reports that account to the police.

From those two cases above, we should learn that as a social media user, we need to be wise and more cautious about our actions. Things that once were said on the platform are not going to be completely gone, even if we try to erase them. There are many great things on the list that we can do with the help of the internet; with the right actions, the internet can be a fun place to explore.

Negative effects of the internet.

In this era, almost everyone has a social media account. This is because social media is an application with a global scope that has many uses, such as for communicating and finding information. For example, Twitter, this media is trending, and many people choose this media because it is believed that we can get more detailed and newer information than broadcast media such as television. I personally also prefer Twitter to find out information that is trending. But behind it all, there are many negative cases that are spread on Twitter. There have been several negative cases on Twitter that have occurred in Indonesia, such as spreading hateful posts and reporting Twitter accounts for alleged defamation.

First, Ahmad Dhani's case was reported to the police because of the hate speech he spread on his Twitter account. In 2017, the article mentioned, that he spread posts containing incitement and hatred towards supporters of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, or Ahok because he does not accept if there is a leader who defames religion. Even though he is already in the judicial process, but Ahmad Dhani has declared it blasphemy of religion (megapolitan.kompas.com). After reading the article, I thought that his actions were wrong and unprofessional as a public figure and a musician. If he does not like the decision, he should remain silent and not have to spit it out.  After all, not everyone has the same thoughts as him, even if there are like-minded people, they will not necessarily hate Ahok like he did until he made a post like that. Supposedly, he can be a good role model for many people, but he is just like someone who wants attention. As a result, he was reported as a violation related to information and electronic transactions by the authorities.

Secondly, the Garuda Indonesia case reported a Twitter account to the police for alleged defamation. In December last year, there was a case of defamation carried out by a Twitter account against the Vice President of the Garuda Indonesia crew. A Twitter account called @digeeembok wrote a post that contained several names that were considered to be using flight attendants for directors or officials. The company also turned out to be in the spotlight with alleged smuggling of Harley Davidson motorcycles and Brompton bicycles (megapolitan.kompas.com). To be honest, I do not think that one of the biggest airlines in Indonesia is involved in a case like this. I was shocked by the statement spread by the account, and in my opinion it was very bold action to write that statement openly without fear of being reported back. The article also mentions that defamation cases are still in the stage of further investigation, but for motorcycle smuggling cases have been investigated and some people from these cases have been removed from their positions.

 

Based on the two cases, we as social media users must know that not only positive things are available, but there are also negative things. In order not to increase the number of negative cases that occur, we must be careful and wise in using it. Do not let us abuse it because it can not only harm yourself but also others.

Besides Twitter is the fastest platform to get information, Twitter also a place for sharing their feeling or to give an opinion on something by its user, but some irresponsibility people use in a bad way such as spread hate. Back to local election second round of DKI Jakarta, a Twitter user with name @Ahmaddhaniprast,  we know him as Ahmad Dhani, a famous musician in Indonesia, he tweeted something bad about candidates No.2 with inciting tone and hateful. After a while, he deleted that tweet. Unfortunately, he’s a public figure, he can’t completely remove it because many people already screenshot it and end up being reported by Ahok-Djarot supporters.

As we all know, Thread fitur is loved by its user. Many users use it to share something good and bad, its dependent by the user.  Might some people will be happy if someone spreads something good, but if it about bad things someone will feel threatened.  User with name @digeeembok often makes a bad thread about someone. This account famous thread is about the concubinage between the flight attendant and higher-ups that happened in a famous airline, Garuda Indonesia. There are more than 30 tweets on a thread this account makes and this account revealed the flight attendant identity in detail. Bravely, @digeeembok mentions a few higher-ups of  Garuda airlines and mock them. Its make the Vice President of  Garuda airlines and reported this account related to defamation.

 

 

Social media are not the only place to get information, make it easy to communicate, and interact with other people, but social media might destroy someone's life if we don't use social media wisely. Just like what the proverbs say we need to watch our word to not hurt someone, but for now, we need to be careful with our finger, so we won't destroy someone's life more suitable for people these days.
