We then see Bruno's mother arguing that killing the Jews is terrible while Bruno's father defines it as a "war". in the second scene we are watching as Pavel accidentally spills wine near Lieutenant Kotler, in which Lieutenant Kotler responds with derogatory words and nobody jumps in to save Pavel, while Bruno is crying and Gretel is as pale as a ghost.
