On my 1.5 plots im all raised beds , being 4 ft wide i can reach the middle from either side so never tread on it , meaning no compaction so no digging . worms do my digging !

Advantages with raised beds ; no digging , no water logging , soil warms up quicker so you can plant out earlier , no caking over in dry weather , you have a good brew under neath so will have a good plant up top !

A good thing with health & safety for the gardener is if a scaffolding board has a small split they cannot be used , i can get 13 ft used boards delivered for £8 . i have a delivery ( 40 boards) about every 3 month , people on our site have seen the difference in my produce & theirs , i was the 1st to have raised beds about 30 years ago , now 3/4 of our site are raised beds ....... even better still . if you cover the boards ( once dry ) in horticultural plastic ( dosent deteriorate ) then they will last 30 years instead of 3 !

Hardest part with raised beds is filling em up with a good brew , through trial & error i now fill mine from a few ingredients i put into my compost . ie ; wood chip on the bottom , spent mushroom compost , spent hops , spent peat , garden compost , leaf mold , top soil ( mole hills ) , worm casts , straw , bracken , manure . All natural products so will break down .

Say ive just picked the last cauliflower i will then top dress the raised bed with home made compost & manure , both have worms in them so when i water & cover with a weed suppressant nature ie ; bacteria , fungi & the worms will now get to work ..... exactly the same as my compost / leaf mold bins , keep em moist & they will break down .
