One idea for threaded discussions by Bob Wolverton

This is something Wes and I were talking about at the PAC meeting. It may be a good way of keeping students engaged between Vidyo Sessions.

Bob, I just read your note. I like this idea, especially if it reduces the 'transactional distance' which I have experienced a bit more with the present group than previous groups. More later.

Wes

This is one option for a threaded discussion-type program that 's free and available to anyone with an e-mail address. I thought I'd create an account for me and share it with you two to see if it's as easy to use as they say it is and if it's something that Wes might find useful for the program.

The idea is that Wes can ask a question about some portion of the weekly topic and the students can see it and respond. It can be set up so that everyone can comment on each other's statements and share thoughts and ideas based on concerns or questions.

If it's something you'd be interested in, I think Wes should start an account of his own, add the students' e-mail addresses and let them know about it at the next didactic session.

Right after (or before) the session he can put a question or two up for consideration and response as the students reflect on the week's topics.

It will take daily checking by Wes to moderate and steer the conversation and by the students to see who posted and what they said. It's more work, but may cut down on the 'transactional distance.'

Anyway, take a look and see if you think it's a good idea.

Good Morning Wes and Terry

Hmmmm, seems like we can modify the header but not add one. That's probably a good thing in that we would want to carry a label of the discussion through.

Terry--getting rid of your flip phone? That's so 21st Century! I think you'll like the iPhone with all its bells and whistles. While it could be a challenge to get 'up to speed' with it, it's really quite intuitive.

Wes--I agree that it's probably a good idea to wait until the next session. Introducing something like this in the middle can just add confusion, but bringing it in at the beginning of a session will just make it a natural part of the syllabus.

b

Nice to have another way to connect with you and I agree this has great potential for CPE...

Technology update - Deb (my wife) and I took the plunge on Saturday and ordered iPhones from Verizon to replace our old flip phones. I suspect the gadget will assist us in connection with the rest of the world!!

-TH-
