C. H. Hughes hypothesized about the psycho-neuro-physical relationship in the body and considered the patient as a whole rather than a sum of parts. He is quoted in the "One Hundred Years of American Psychiatry" Published for the American Psychiatric Association By Columbia University Press, New York 1944, as saying, "As we recognize psychic influence over our physiologic life, over our physical and mental habits, so must we come to acknowledge it more generally in our dealings with disease." This theory of thought kicked off psychosomatic medicine.
