In exploring HRM opportunities, job descriptions were reviewed for such roles as Executive Assistant, which are certainly closely related to the responsibilities of a future HR Manager. A specific list in the Executive Assistant at Calibre, Valentine Gold Mine, includes management of the executives' schedules, compilation of high-level reports, and coordination of meetings; each of these is an important skill in HR. To move into HRM, foundational skills such as these must be expanded to include recruitment, employee relations, and team leadership.

During Week 2, I worked in the process of drafting a resume which is related to HR positions, by placing emphasis on transferable skills which I obtained from my administrative background. I also dedicated time to enhancing my listening abilities which are essential to understand employee grievances within HR contexts. Listening is critical in HR,however, it aids in conflict resolution and delivering effective performance reviews. By attentively listening to employees, HR can more effectively address issues, offer constructive feedback and foster a supportive work environment. This, in turn, cultivates improved communication and trust between HR and employees.

In Week 3, I focused on verbal and non-verbal communication in HR, particularly in interviews. I learned to identify verbal and non-verbal cues such as body language to assess candidates better. So, practicing non-verbal observation skills during mock interviews helped me understand how gestures, posture and facial expressions can reveal a lot about a candidate’s confidence and honesty.

Non-verbal communication is also vital in HR for employee engagement and dispute resolution. In employee interactions, paying attention to non-verbal cues helps HR professionals to measure feelings and attitudes, even when words don’t fully express them This is especially important in resolving conflicts and maintaining a positive workplace environment, however, it can be tricky.
