A food chain is a linear network of links in a food web starting from producer organisms and ending at apex predator species or decomposer species. A food chain also shows how the organisms are related with each other by the food they eat. (picture from slideplayer.com )All organisms directly or indirectly get energy from the sun.~Kenji
A food chain is a diagram that shows how food energy moves from one organism to another in a given environment.

Food chains are directional paths of trophic energy or, equivalently, sequences of links that start with basal species, such as producers or fine organic matter, and end with consumer organisms. Food chain is a cycle of a energy. ~Yanbei
The food chain's length is a continuous variable that provides a measure of the passage of energy and an index of ecological structure that increases in value counting progressively through the linkages in a linear fashion from the lowest to the highest trophic levels.~Jenny

(group opinion )
Yes, food chain is important to human beings.
Photosynthesis is the start of the food chain as plant is at the bottom of the food chain .(Light energy->plant->photosynthesis)Anyway, most plants do not eat animals right? Above the plants are smaller animals /insects .Then the larger animals eat the smaller animals /insects. HUMANS ARE AT THE VERY TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN !

When only one element is removed from the food chain it can result in extinction of a species in some cases. A producer is able to covert inorganic compounds into organic compounds.
