Judging by her actions she seemed like an average woman, isolating herself from war and letting a child sleep in her barn for safety, these are normal actions a person would do in the situation, nothing out of the norm to me. As for when she leaves him for her own safety, was it selfish? Yes, but is it cruel, no. As an elderly woman she must look up for herself, and war makes things more serious. Although abandoning a child without food or equipment to last...not exactly what I would do if I were to be in that certain situation.

2. In my perspective, if she was thinking of herself, would she have let him stay? Would she have fed him? She helped Salva get on his feet for a bit and then let him go, it's not like she could care for him forever and guartantee her self survival! It's a war, not a daycare, every person must fend for themselves and help others for a while. Salva supposedly "Auntie" was smart, to deal with a situation like this. In conclusion This old lady did NOT shut him out but didn't let him in.

Q1 My first impression of “Aunty” that she was including nice old lady. And she new how it felt to be alone without her. I am inferring that she has experienced something like salva. Also I think the old lady has experienced the first civil war that Sudan had as a child and she didn’t want salva to fill sad and miss his family and have some company. Then when she said “I can’t help you any more” I thought it was very selfish and being a bit selfish on the child. As salva hasn’t experienced anything like this before so he would be wondering constantly where am l? Where is my family?

Q2 I think she was thinking for her self and I think she put deep thought into this decision. But I still can’t believe that she ditched salva I think a smart decision would have been to stay with salva or take salva with her. I think it would be rude and extremely selfish to leave her their.

She looked after him as if he was her own son, when she left I think it was the right thing to do to leave him there because she can put him and her in a lot of danger taking him with her and it is good because he needs to learn how to survive on his own because he cannot rely on her to stay alive he has to rely on himself and what’s around him.

2.Personally,I think that she is thinking of both of them. Knowing that the rebels were still out searching for the people of Northern Sudan, she kept Salva safe for a couple of days as well as feed him.

Truly, I feel like the woman had done all she could've by feeding him and giving him water. She was not being selfish at all because, for her own safety as well as Salva's, she didn't bring him along. She knew that if she brought him along that they would target him and her, so he could stay safe in the house/barn and they would not target the woman.

So to leave him is pretty bad. I think she is also selfish because she was only thinking of herself and not Salva.

Q2 : I think the woman is only thinking of herself. It is sad that this is a real story and is still happening today with all the threats I cant imagine what Salva was feeling. Salva went through a lot losing his family, then being abandoned by the group he was with, THEN being pushed away by the old lady. And I'm almost certain his friend died. That not it just keeps on getting worse. If I were Salva I would not know what to Do with myself, It is just Insane I would do more than just scream in sadness I would do more than just dread, I would not even know what to do with myself.

But I was a little shocked when the women left without Salva because I thought that the women would help Salva out. I believe that the women wanted to protect Salva so he was asked not to go with her. That's when food and water was limited (another mouth to feed). My impression of her when she left was that she was just using Salva, and was a thoughtless old lady. That's because Salva was doing all her chores, and then the old lady just leaves. I believe that is kind of mean. I think she is thinking only of herself.

At first, the woman seemed very helpful to Salva. I say helpful instead of kind because she never really asks if he needs help or how she can help him, she just relies on her instincts to keep him alive. For example, she doesn't ask if Salva is hungry, and once she decides (without asking) that he is hungry, she immediately goes inside to get him peanuts. Now you can argue that the variety of food available to her was scarce due to the war, and you're probably right, but the way she did it was kind of forceful. Don't get me wrong, she did a lot for Salva, especially considering her conditions, but I just wouldn't say she was kind like most everyone else has.

Her gruff approach to taking care of Salva didn't change very much from when she met Salva to when she sent him with the traveling group. I say this because, again, she did not ask him politely to leave, she just stated that he was going to; and once the group arrived to the woman's house, she had already decided that these were the people he was going to leave with and this was when they were going to say goodbye.

That being said, I do not at all think that she was being selfish. After all, she gave Salva food, shelter, etc. for, what was it, 3 weeks? Considering that she was living not only in a warzone, but also going into the dry season, in which food would be extremely sparce, she was definitely thinking of both

Overall, the woman was very helpful to Salva in giving him shelter, food, and even work for a long time, in which he surely would've perished alone. To the end, she was gruff and very sure of herself (in the best way possible) and was a huge turning point in Salva's story.

Then, when she flat out REFUSED to let Salva stay with her, even after he was there for a few days, my impression of her changed. How could she not let a refugee child from her own tribe stay with her? I think she was getting some free labor off of him, or just using him in general to make her life easier. Finally, she might have worried that she would attract the rebels to her home by harboring a refugee, which could disturb her relationship with the rebels.

If you think about it it was really nice of her to give him food because it is during a war, so most people would want to save all their resources for them selves. She let him stay with her but didn't make any big attachments because I bet you she knew she would have to leave him behind. Then, when she did leave him behind, it was for a practical reason. Salva, while not a man, is a boy and if found by rebels, would be captured and if the woman was with him she would also get caught. I don't think that was a selfish thing to do. I mean, if she really was selfish would she have given the food to him? Think about it. She does all these kind things, but she does everything for a reason. My impression of her never really changed.

Is that why they left? Then, after that I began to like the woman, and trust her. Even though Salva wasn't much of a burden, it was still incredibly nice of her to let him stay. In the end, when we find out she is fleeing, I had mixed emotions. I was angered that she left him there on his own with pretty much no hope. on the other hand, she was generous to tell him what he would face if he stayed, and why she was leaving.

At first I was surprised that was nice enough to take him in, and let him sleep in her barn. Adding on, I was surprised that she didn't think that he would slow things down and be one more person to feed. When the lady let him stay I thought she was nice but my mind changed when I say the next part. My impression on her when she is leaving him is mean, and selfish. I thought this because she was like oh I can't take you in anymore I'm just going to leave you here. it think that the woman was only thinking about herself. I think this because if I were in her shoes I wold let him come with me. Adding on to that other thought that she was just leaving him so she wouldn't get captured by the guards. I also think that she just didn't want another person to worry about so then she could go faster but it was still mean to leave a child behind. In conclusion I think that she was nice to let him stay in her barn, but was mean and selfish for leaving Salva behind.

My first impression on the barn girl is that she was nice and that she was considerate. I thought she was pretty kind since she offered the boy her barn to sleep in. My impression when she announced that she was leaving the boy behind was that she was rude and not caring towards children. If i was in her spot I would have taken the boy with me and help feed him. I wouldn't care of the risk of being stopped because he is still a young child. He would protect her still even if he is young he could still have strength, and she is old. She was leaving for acceptably good reasons. Overall I still think she was kind of rude for leaving a poor helpless child alone for the soldiers to take, and he has already been left behind once and this adds to a second time.

She allowed him to sleep in her barn and in return Salva did a few chores. When she left I didn't think differently of her. I think that the choice she made was quite reasonable. Salva was staying at the barn at the courtesy of the lady, he saw that the pond was getting smaller. He must've known that dry season was approaching. If the lady brought Salva with her he most likely would've been picked out by the rebels while they were walking so he could become a soldier. By leaving him behind she chose the best option for herself and Salva.

When she had to leave, I think it was a reasonable request to Salava to stay behind, because she did say that if he came, it would've been more difficult since just an old women by herself, they would've respected her? (That's what i'm getting at here.) So if Salava would've rejected her request to stay without her and not follow her, they would've gotten hurt? It seemed the old women was helping Salava out and being open-minded and honest with him.

When I found out that the woman was going to let Salva stay in her barn I thought that she was very kind. I thought this because she was providing him peanuts to eat and a shelter to stay in. She seemed extremely understanding of his circumstance and provided him with what he needed. I thought that her kindness was very surprising. During a war this bad, watching people travel past her home away from the fighting, and finding out that uninvited guests were sleeping in her barn are all things that I would have gotten mad about if I was her. Instead this old woman was happy and willing to give to others when she saw the need.

Rayana S.(Atlanta Georgia) I am responding to Emma Kelowna BC. I agree with your first statement , but I disagree with your last one, because the Dinka woman didn't ditch him. She could have said, "Sorry you can't stay here. I only have enough food and water for myself", but she didn't. She kindly let him stay for a few hours and gave him water, food, and shelter. She had a life that she wanted to live and she had to take care of herself, as well. She let him know why she was leaving, and that's why I think she didn't just ditch him.

On the other hand the women could also bring Salva along and that would be perfect for both so i rethought and know i think the women was only thinking for here own life. The women counts as both a selfish and a thoughtful person but overall i think she was a great women with a big heart because she knew she was going somewhere dangerous and there was a slight risk that Salva would get injured or even worse. To recap in my personal opinion the women was trying to save both her life and Salvas life.

I really thought about this for a long time and figured out that the women was helping herself only. My first impression of the women is her being so generous giving salva all the food and stuff, but then the women decided to leave salva alone which is awful because salva would be the perfect person she'd bring with and she because she thought this child might bring danger

My first expression of the women，was that she was the typical person who was old，jaded， but very kind ，for that she gave Salva a place to live and food to eat. Compares to when she force Salva to leave，i still stays the same opinion，because she was also forced to leave where she lives. If she was a selfish one，she would just tell Salva to go，instead she explain that the situation was bad and they have to move away.It make no sense if she does not want Salva to stay because of her selfish and hate of the boy , but also leaves at the same time. I believe that been force by the environment and backgrounds of the period, she has to leave, and leaving was not a action only for herself, it is for both of them. She does not like Salva to come with her anymore since she was afraid she can not take care of salva any more.

I think that it was beautiful what the old woman did for Salva. She could have turned him away. In the mist of war anyone can be dangerous or seen as threat but she decided to help anyway. She was so kind and empathetic to the situation that he was in. She provided him with portions of food she did have enough of for herself. Her actions resonated with me. Even with bad in the world there is always some good.

While reading I was very surprised that the woman was willing to let him stay with her. I think she realized that he was so young and that he was very scared. Her willingness to help him really surprised me but I was thankful he was not alone any longer. Having said this my impression of her did change when she left. Initially I thought she was uninterested and didn't care, but I realize now that she gave him what she could in order to help him survive a little while on his own, but she also needed to consider her own ability to survive. The old woman provided him with a small supply of food and water then parted ways.
