At the end of 2019, a new type of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was discovered in China and caused widespread transmission. As a terrible disease with strong infectiousness, it continues to spread to all corners of the world and eventually leads to a global outbreak.
In times of crisis, the important role played by the mass media in health crisis communication deserves attention. Mass media can work effectively in transmitting health crisis signals, informing the public of important health information, and reminding the public to take necessary precautionary measures (Fu & Zhu, 2020). It can also mitigate or exacerbate the crisis through the major news frames used for reporting (Ogbodo et al., 2020).
It is of great significance to study the media of the country that first sends the signal of the COVID-19. It can help us understand how the media communicated relevant information in the early stages of the outbreak, and what kind of news frames was used to construct people's awareness of the epidemic. Therefore, this research examines China Daily's news coverage in the early stage of the COVID-19 Outbreak, aiming to explore the prominent news frames adopted by China Daily.

This research applies content analysis and frame analysis to study China Daily's news coverage about COVID-19.

Research Population: 84 news articles in the China Daily, published between January 10 and January 31 with keywords ‘COVID-19’ or ‘coronavirus’, derived from the Factiva database.

Sample Selection: The website random.org will be used to randomly generate 20 numbers, which correspond to the serial numbers of news articles retrieved on Factiva. As a result, News reports with matching numbers are the samples used for analysis.

Coding: By referring to the news framing used by Luther and Zhou (2005) in the same type of research, and analyzing the data set of my research, a codebook containing 6 news frames for coding is designed. These news frames include economic consequence, human interest, attribution of responsibility, health severity, cooperation and support, prevention and control procedures.
