These early rules, developed by the Bath Badminton Club in 1877, formed the foundation

for modern badminton. The original scoring system, established around 1873, dictated that

a match was decided by the best of three games.

• Each game was played to 15 points for men's singles and all doubles games, while

ladies' singles were played to 11 points.

• The serve in badminton must be hit underarm, with the shuttlecock struck below

the server's waist, and it must pass over the short service line on the opponent's

court. Unlike tennis, the shuttlecock is not allowed to bounce on the court, and

players stand within their service courts during the serve.

During this event, his guests were

introduced to the game of Poona. The game was well-received and soon

became known as “badminton” after the estate.
