One piece of evidence would be the "zero-tolerance" rules and the strict/disciplinary action these schools take to give children a better education. It is seen that these schools and the teachers do not want to deal with 'bad-ass' students and further make rules that restrict students from being different. Although it is seen to better the education of these students, make black and brown students are targeted and are punished for not "walking in a straight-line" that they try to pave for their students.

I would consider sending my child to a charter school due to the flexibility that these schools can offer curriculum wise. I like the idea of having school not only be based on the core four subjects. Like one of our first lessons where we created our own school, I'd love to imagine a charter school that isn't targeting a specific group of students or disadvantaging any student and rather uses their flexibility to make a great change for all students.

Charter schools provide an option for students, especially parents of color, to be able to enroll their children into something other than their zoned schools. Allowing for an education for their child that they may specifically need, straying away from the traditional ways of school and what may have affected students and have caused trauma in multiple communities.

One thing charter schools have a lot of is power. They hold financial and teaching power. They have the option to 'kick students out' after the funding date if they feel the kid will lower their test scores. It is very hard for charters to stay open so the pressure put on the school for good grades is very high. The teachers also have a lot of power which makes teachers seem more intimidating. School should be a place of fun and growth- not just strict teachers who let the power get to their head.

I would not send my child to a charter school if it is managed by a charter program. I enjoyed my experience in public school and I strongly believe that a combination of parenting and the schools I went to shaped me to be a caring person. I hated the anxiety of test prep and that being a daily task is something I would not want to put on my child's shoulders. I would, however, give my child a choice at a certain age, and support them in whatever they choose.

I would not send my child to charter schools because in my opinion charter schools close children off from the world. In addition charter schools are big on exams and as someone who has anxiety when it comes to exams from public schooling I wouldn't want to put extra pressure. Being in a charter school seems to be an excess amount of pressure, when life doesn't get any easier. I went to public school all my life and I believe that I turned out well. Public schools weren't any easier, and you had to learn and do everything for yourself but charter schools are harder because they focus on the success of each student individually.

Charter schools are prominent on no excuses, no lateness, and in a sense perfection to its maximum. In the Podcast, they mentioned how if you can not abide by their rules, if you can not be academically perfect to their standards then you are frowned upon and in this case, belittled ( not only belittled by the school towards the kids but the parents as well). If these charter schools are meant to encourage students to be their best selves but demand the students to just be perfect without giving them time to grow academically. Charter schools are expensive and can limit the amount of extra help or tutor programs they may need and the no excuse policy puts pressure on the child and the parents.

When children getbtheir traumas addressed, have multiple opportunities and outlets, when the parents have more that a zone school to choose from and there is more money and resources to go around, charter schools prove more effective in educating children and involving families as well. And public schools are shutting down because of parents wanting their children to attend charter schools that already educate about 11% of NYC students

I attended a middle school that a charter school moved into and I, as a middle schooler, did not like having my lunch and breakfast times shortened so they could come down. I didn't like the shorter gym periods. I didn't appreciate them going from taking sections of the fourth floor, to taking over the whole floor and expanding. I didn't like how they made my classes more packed because we had less space and more kids.

Like I stated in my other answer, charter schools have a lot of discipline and order, but that might not always be a good thing. Throughout the podcast we hear how children were on extremely strict schedules (no latenesses are excepted) and how if they did not complete their lunches in a specific time frame it would be thrown out. These schools seem very academically oriented and do not seem to focus on much else.

The scheduling is very demanding and it gives students tons of class work and no fun time. Charter schools seem to care more about the child’s grades than their mental and physical health.

Many charter schools have a "No Excuses" policy. No excuses refers to no excuses for failure and no excuses for letting kids down but also refers to pretty serious things like no excuses for fidgeting, being late to school, and also not conforming to one particular way of expressing yourself. Many charter schools are known for being very strict about punctuality and putting high standards of students and their parents. In the podcast they mentioned how one mother, Anika Greenidge sent her son to a charter school and as he was struggling with reading, he was placed in a special early- reading program and if he was late, he would have to go into the school a different way, be yelled at by the teacher and not be allowed in the classroom. No child should be denied an education for being a few minutes late. Punishing children for things like speaking too loud, or tapping on their desk is very harsh knowing that they are just children. Having one set way of learning and doing things isn't going to help children, it's simply going to leave behind the children who don't learn the one strict way they choose to teach. Charter schools end up pushing out students who can’t keep up.
