Upon arrival to Trinidad and Tobago to study at UWI, I was greeted with a blend of accents and various dialects of Caribbean people from across the islands. One interesting thing that I have learnt is that each territory may have a unique word to describe the same thing but it takes a keen observation to learn the differences. One such example is with an East Indian sweetmeat as depicted below which is common across the region.
In Guyana, we refer to it as Mithai while in Trinidad it is known as Kurma and in Grenada, it is known as Kumar. The same ingredients are used to make it but it has three different names: Mathai, Kurma and Kumar. How fascinating!
