I chose this article because I wrote about the Larry Nassar sexual assault case. Through writing I discovered that my thesis was that people turned a blind eye to these assaults and that the blame and punishment should be expanded to more than just Nassar. The people who saw these assaults happen and did nothing are wrongdoers as well. This made me curious as to why people wouldn't step in to help and a possible explanation is The Bystander Effect.

Editors argued about what a clear example of the bystander effect are. One editor made 9/11 an example but another editor proceeded to delete it and provide a new example. He/She said that 9/11 was not a good example because it did not clearly emphasize on people helping if they are alone or around other people which is an important point in the bystander effect.

The lead section is understandable and well written, the structure is clear, and the various aspects of the topic are well balanced. The wikipedia page references good source articles and primary sources.

The Wikipedia page for just the word bystander (not bystander effect) is a poorly written article. There seems to be aspects of the topic that are missing, and there are various spelling errors throughout the article. The introduction is only one sentence and the article itself has little to no content. The only reference is another wikipedia page.

It was interesting to learn about the bystander effect and further my research off of my analytical paper. I did not know before that there was an actual science for why bystanders do not help. This assignment is useful to help me become a better researcher and analyze articles more efficiently. From here I want to look into ways we can inform people of the bystander effect and how not to get caught up in it.
