A graphic artist in the 20th century, Leopoldo Méndez's work mostly focused on engraving for illustrations and other print work, usually connected to his political and social activism.

Méndez was a co-founder of Mexico's most famous printmaking collective and used his printmaking work and general artwork to challenge agrarian reforms, Indigenous rights, and anti-fascism.

Méndez was born in Mexico City and studied art here. He grew up poor and one of eight children. In 1933, he joined the Liga de Escritores y Artistas Revolucionarios (the League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists).

Here, he developed a philosophy of art that uses activism and liberation to convey and help the issues with rights and fascism in Mexico.

In 1937 he founded the Taller de Gráfica Popular, a group of artist who practiced the work of print making, book illustration and much more.

He left this group in 1961 when he then devoted his work to publishing books on Mexican printmaking and folk art.

For the rest of his working days he advocated for leftist movements around the world until he died in 1969.
