Evaluating Diversity in Marketing by Naima Rashid

1. Choose one of the promotional tactics your library uses from your handout. (For example: Flyers, Signs, Posters, Newsletter, Digital signage, Social media, Website, Quarterly program brochure, Email, Books display, Video )

2. Then, look at the last promotion your library did using that tactic. If collection items were included, were there any books that authentically underrepresented identities in your community? Could the amount of representation be improved?
3. Write a few sentences reflecting on the representation or how the promotion could have been improved with more accurate representation.

There were books of racial diversity, but not necessarily any other diverse, underrepresented group.
3) I think it's easy for people to look at racial diversity and see this as THEE way to represent instead of all the diverse groups that are truly underserved.

Using research info, the library created a post about writers/authors that were also siblings. The post included authors/writers from different backgrounds, races and on the closing slide including stock images of siblings from the top 3 demographic groups in the library's area. Post could have been improved more if the library was able to find a set of brothers that were also authors/writers as the original post only included sisters.

For New in books social media posts, I deliberately focus on diverse authors, especially for children and ya books. Because I use book covers in the post, this is more subtle. I could highlight one or two books, and give my audience more info about the author, especially if my intention is for it to be a new to them author/book.

I think the promotion did a great job of highlighting the most-requested popular author books that our current patrons are checking out, but I also believe there were underrepresented identities that were left out. We need to determine who the underrepresented populations are.
