Kindergarten is an important institution in the American educational system because it helps children at a young age to hone basic skills in life. By the end of the school year, adolescent should be able to understand the concept of sharing, following directions, know the colors, shapes, and alphabets. They also learn how to develop their communication, creativity, and many other skills. At this age, children are the most impressionable because they are able to retain information quicker. In Kindergarten, children learn to grow socially because they interact with their own peers and build their self-confidence. This type of facility provides additional help to mold children into morally good people because they are taught what is morally acceptable and looked down upon. This institution introduces young children to a school environment where they will be ready to enter grade school comfortably.

4. No Child Left Behind

The No Child Left Behind Act, which was signed by President George W. Bush, proposed that all students will have equal educational opportunities, regardless of race, gender, or socioeconomic status. Although there are many pros and cons with this bill, I thought that it was a stepping-stone towards better academic achievements for students. It aimed at hiring qualified and professional teachers who meet the certification requirements. By having more efficient teachers, they will improve the student’s educational lives because they are expected to be competent in their field. On the other hand, if students are not able to meet the academic standards, they will be offered additional assistance from programs that will give them extra help. Educating the students and offering those that needs additional is important because the nation as a whole want to see their children succeed. Academic institutions were created to nurture and foster the mind of the young ones.

3. The Kalamazoo Case

I believe that the Kalamazoo case was important because publicly supported high school may have begun here. The Kalamazoo’s first high school was established in Michigan and it was funded by taxpayer’s money. At first, the townsmen were appalled because many opposed to using their tax money to fund a public school. The previous education system was inefficient because teachers only taught students basic education until they felt that the students were competent enough to be finished with school. As opposed to Kalamazoo High School, which offered multiple subjects ranging from many possibilities for higher education. The court case allowed other high schools in Michigan to be created and publicly funded. This has an impact on the modern education system because it shaped the path for educational institutions to be funded off taxpayer’s money.

2. The Public High School

The public high school in America has a great impact on the educational system because it helps students grow mentally in many ways. In primary schools, student’s brain are still young and developing, so teachers do not implement vigorous teachings as opposed to secondary education, which is more advanced. The focus of public high school is to teach students to be more open-minded by enforcing critical and analytical skills, which will help them in the real world. The public high school education has changed over the course of history because time is always changing and it must be kept up to maintain the standards. With the Common Core, (depending on the subjects), it is more challenging for students because they must think critically, form opinions and support those opinions. It may be efficient because there is no right or wrong, and students are able to articulate from their responses. Having a public high school system is a positive advantage because many families would not be able to afford enrolling into a private school. Public schools are funded by taxpayer’s money; therefore it allows many students in financially unstable families to get equal educational opportunities.

1. Brown vs. Board of Education (Topeka)

I ranked this case as number one because it overturned the Plessy v. Ferguson court rule. Before this court case, the concept of "separate but equal" was applied on the education system. During this time, there was segregation between the whites and the blacks in schools. Many Caucasian-Americans did not want to interact with the African-Americans and most importantly, did not want their children to engage with them. I believe that it was unethical for white parents to implement inequality into their children’s mind. The public school should have been a place free from racial discrimination because all students were there to learn. How can students learn if there are bullies and victims of bullies? Once the Brown vs. Board of Education case was won, black students were able to receive equal protection under the law. School is a place of learning and the teacher’s role is to transform students into civic people to become an effective citizen. Teachers who are corrupt are guided by their immoral beliefs and that affected many black students because they felt unprotected. On the other hand, the Brown vs. Board of Education has an impact on the education system today because students of all races are able to attend public schools together and share the facilities.
