SAMH was founded in 1923 to provide support to a wide network of Local Associations for mental health.
From the mid 1950’s and into the 60’s our activities centred on public education through lectures, courses and conferences.

Our records show that from 1976 we shifted the focus of our activities to include representing the interests of people with mental health problems. The campaigning side of SAMH is very much at the forefront of our activities today.

In 1983 we opened our first service, Sprout Market Garden; a horticultural project where people with mental health problems could gain work experience. The following year, SAMH's first Supported Accommodation project was set up in Livingston, West Lothian. It is hard to believe that as recently as 1984, SAMH only employed three members of staff.

There followed a period of gradual and steady growth in the organisation until 1988. At this time a combination of Sir Roy Griffith's report on care in the community and the introduction of the Employment Training Programme, saw the organisation embark on a period of exponential growth. Later, SAMH successfully secured substantial European Social Fund monies, which combined with the introduction of the NHS and Community Care Act, permitted the organisation to continue to develop new services.

Today we still run thriving horticultural projects that operate amongst our 60 services in communities across Scotland. SAMH services are person centred and based on an ethos of recovery. We provide mental health social care support, homelessness, addictions and employment services, among many others.

These services, together with our national programme work in See Me, respectme, suicide prevention, sport and physical activity; inform our policy and campaign work to influence positive and social change in Scotland.

This is a key part of building local expertise and keeping the water flowing, whatever our changing climate brings.

Here in the UK, Water Aids probably take clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene for granted. But millions of people still don't have these vital services. Help us make them normal for everyone, everywhere within a generation - there are so many ways to get involved...

Social Bite was founded in Edinburgh, Scotland in August 2012 as a small cafe. One day, a homeless young man named Peter came to the cafe and asked for a job. When they offered the young man a job, it was also the origin of an unexpected 9 years of charity work and homelessness. Since then, they started to offer more jobs to people experiencing homelessness and introduced a “Pay it Forward” system in cafes that allows customers to buy some food in advance for homeless people to get later on.

Later, the establishment grew into a major employer of people experiencing homelessness and extreme barriers to employment, as well as the largest provider of free freshly made free food in the UK to those in need.

On puppy farms, dogs can be too afraid to make a noise. Puppy farms are places where dogs are bred en masse for a quick profit, with no love, kindness, or consideration for their future or well-being. Sometimes hundreds of dogs can be found kept in dark, cramped and stressful conditions – and often harmed by terrible neglect.
When rescue operations happen, the network of rehoming centres are often called upon to care for the huge amount of dogs, many of which will be pregnant, in need of help.
They are sometimes caked in their own excrement, with overgrown nails, and matted coats. Many are in agony from infections or horribly exhausted from being overbred. The charity frequently have to care for their litters too, who can be born with a multitude of problems.

In Dogs Trust, everyone can donate to break their silence with a gift and help to serve more puppies.

The research recognised the complex needs of young women in this position and the high risk of ongoing targeting from perpetrators due to their vulnerable circumstances.

We are a charity of women supporting women who are survivors of men’s sexual violence. Using the framework of the Judith Herman model: Establishing Safety, Mourning & Remembering, Reconnection and Move On, we operate the Social Model of support. This concentrates on the experience of abuse as the issue, and recognises that the behaviours that survivors have had to use, such as self-harm and anger, are coping strategies.
