         <description><![CDATA[<div>”One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and discrimination.”<br><br>King points out that although so much time has passed since the Emancipation Proclamation, there are still many injustices African Americans face, such segregation and discrimination. King wants his audience to realize that although slavery is in their past, there are still laws in their society that are racist. This would motivate his listeners to fight to repeal those laws and make changes towards equality in their cities. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>“It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds.'” <br><br>King compares the United States unwillingness to provide people of color the “American Dream” to a person giving out a bad check with insufficient funds. King is pointing out that there was a promise made to all citizens of the United States: a promise for a better life and equal opportunity for all, and America has not been able to uphold that promise. This metaphor would evoke a sense of anger in his listeners who are unable to experience the America they see on their televisions. This would also create a feeling of disapproval and disappointment towards a country that cannot be trusted to fulfill its promise of equality and motivate them to demand change and cash the "check" that was promised: a check of equality </div>]]></description>

         <title>MLK Speech: Connection to Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson. </title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Both texts highlight injustices faced by people of color in the United States. King's call for equality parallels Stevenson's demand for better representation &amp; treatment of minorities on death row. Both men point out how the United States may claim that "all men are created equal," but that is not the reality. Racism is an undeniable component of Walter McMillian's, the man Stevenson represents, arrest. Racist societal norms and laws are also highlighted in King's speech when he reminds his listeners of motels Black Americans are not allowed to stay in and cities they are not allowed to vote in. In both texts, it is made known that the United States can and should do better. </div>]]></description>

MLK aims more specifically to achieve the racial justice that has been promised to him and all African Americans. Atticus’s purpose focuses on ensuring racial justice is seen in the justice system and equal treatment is given to each and every person who enters the court room. Both MLK and Atticus believe that people should never be treated differently based on the color of their skin.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Both speeches begin with a somber tone describing the current society and the impact racism has on those living in it. MLK switches to a more inspirational and hopeful tone as a means to motivate this audience to take up the cause. He ends his speech on an uplifting note, repeating the line "I have a dream" to show his hope for the future. Atticus tends to be more accusatory in his tone, speaking to a jury that he fears will condemn a man based on the color of this skin. He ends his speech with less hope in his audience. In desperate plead, he whispers, "In the name of God, believe him" showing how he is not so hopeful that his audience will join his cause. </div>]]></description>
