Q3: what are some flaws in this product and how can they be improved?
Ans: From the video, it seems like the bed has only several vibration pattern, speed and strength level. Although this can cater to most of babies' needs, it is very generic. So, the future version of this machine can embed a SOC(system on a chip), and have a user interface for manual control. The UI can be a screen on the bed, or using bluetooth/wifi/NFC to connect to an app on the phone. An app should be also developed for this machine that allows customization of the speed and strength of vibration. Parents can also key in the health conditions and weight of the baby, so strength and pattern of vibration can be adjusted according to every baby. At the same time, the company can also release a database online, of different profiles for different babies. Parents can simply download the file and load it onto the machine for their baby. This improvement is to make the machine more suitable for all the babies as a family might have more than 1 baby, or the baby have a specific health condition.

QN 1: I think this product is trying to address parents' issue of not being able to stop their babies from crying. The symptoms of gas, colic, and reflux cause discomfort to the child; therefore, the child will shed more volume of tear than the pacific ocean and wail louder than a jet engine. The vibrations from the Babocush will relieve the symptoms; as a result, the discomfort will be minimized. Additionally, it comes with a quilted mattress protector, outer fleece cover, and shaped foam mattress to make it ultra soft so that the baby will be more comfortable; therefore, the baby can also fall asleep more easily. Essentially, the product addresses parents' issue of not being able to stop their babies from crying by making them comfortable and facilitating the process of them falling asleep. Parents will be more at ease when their babies aren't in anguish. The parents will also need to devote less time to taking care of their baby, allowing them more time for other important things.

The product aims to help babies who have difficulty sleeping by relieving symptoms of colic, gas and reflux in these babies. These symptoms are the main causes of why the babies feel discomfort and are unable to sleep well as a result. The users are babies, and the product addresses their needs by vibrating at different speeds and patterns and stimulating the sound of a heartbeat. This helps the babies relax, and alleviates their sleeping issues. One way to improve would be to make it less bulky and easier to carry around such that they can be used outside the house should it be required.

Q1. This product addresses the issue of trying to pacify crying babies and the difficulties in making babies sleep.

Q2. The users are the babies and their parents. This product is able to calm down a crying baby and help them relax, which makes it easier for them to fall asleep. It uses technology to relieve the symptoms of colic, gas and reflux for babies, which addresses discomforts that babies experience. Thus, parents will have an easier time taking care of their babies. They are able to do other things as well, instead of devoting all their time into taking care of their child. As it is hard to make babies sleep, it also helps the baby get a good sleep and not whine in the middle of the night, which allows parents to sleep well too.

Q3. As the surface of the product is very small, toys or cushions are unable to be placed around the child. This could mean that babies who are unable to sleep without their toys would not be able to sleep well on this product. This can be improved by increasing the surface area of the cushion and adding in slight ridges at the sides to keep the toys in.

Q4. This product can be used for sick toddlers to relax or fall asleep as well. Instead of allowing the user to lie down on their stomach, the user can be reclined on a vibrating or rocking chair. This chair can also include music speaker functions or televisions to entertain or relax the toddler while distracting him from the pain the sickness causes.

Q5. Details are very important in creating a product that is best suited for the target audience. For example, the quilted mattress protector and shaped foam mattress is designed to improve the experience of the baby.

The vibrating bed helps newborns sleep comfortably and relieves the symptoms of colic, gas and reflux for babies.

2. The primary users are the newborns and the secondary users are the parents of these babies.
The vibrating bed is specially designed for newborns, having an angled cushion and 3 vibration speeds to cater to the child’s preference. It can also stimulate a heartbeat which makes the newborns feel like their parent is embracing them.
The product also helps parents as they are able to put their child to bed without them being physically there. This is useful for parents who are busy or it’s their first time having to raise a child
3. Product flaws
Babies are not encouraged to sleep face down and this product only seems to allow such. It is also rather restrictive. Perhaps a concaved shaped one with a straps that allows the child to sleep on their back would be safer for them in terms of breathing.

4. Older children (1 year olds). The product would be bigger and similar to the solution to the product flaw in the above qn. The only feature that remains the same is the vibration or swaying movement of the product. 1 year olds would require a less restrictive space as well because they will be more mobile compared to newborns.

5.

CG 08/19 Ranier and Zhe Ming
Q1) This product is aimed at alleviating the issues of pacifying babies and the difficulties in making babies sleep.
Q2) Users: Parents & Their Infants
It works by helping babaies fall asleep by calming them down. It does so by targeting the reasons why babies tend to experience discomfort which are reflux for babies and colic gas. With less time spent pacifying their children, parents can focus on their work and get some quality uninterrupted sleep as they do not need to wake up to pacify their babies.
Q3) Areas for improvement:
The babies are not able to move around at all as the size of the cot is very small and would prove to be a tight fit, even for infants. Moreover, the design is heavy and relatively bulky, making it difficult to transport and assemble. To alleviate these issues, we propose that the cot be made abit bigger in size while also using less dense materials / making it dissassembalable so as to help parents move it around.
Q4) Chosen alternate user: Elderly / Adults aged 50+
To battle arthritis and backpain experienced by those more advanced in age, the same technology used in the Babocush can be adapted in the form of a rocking chair at a frequency which increases blood flow and relaxes muscles to ease pain. Moreover it helps working adults relax after a long day of work and help them take a short nap .
Q5) Ideas must address the needs of the target audience, which in itself must be specific and the details are very important even in the conception stage of the design.

1. What issue do you think this product is trying to address?
Ans: The most major problem the product is meant to address would be a way to relieve the symptoms of colic, gas and reflux for babies since such symptoms are extremely prevalent for babies (Reflux: when a baby spits out milk due to developing esophagus. Colic: when babies cry incessantly. Gas: babies pass gas).
Some sub problems the products want to address may include:
1. Some young parents may want to go overseas but the crib they buy is too big to carry or simply cumbersome to do so. Hence, the product was specifically designed to be lightweight and more convenient to carry around. Moreover, although portable cribs already exist, most of them are not very durable. Therefore, the crib is make to be extremely durable.
2. For homemakers who are busy with household chores, it can be difficult to pacify both your baby and do chores simultaneously. Therefore, this product was created to provide a very comfortable bed so babies sleep peacefully and not bother their parents too much.
3. It also aims to solve flat-head syndrome where a babies head is flattened due to excess pressure on one side.

2. Who are the users in context and how does this product meet the users’ needs?
Answer: Homemakers, people with premature babies, parents who have babies who suffer from reflux, colic and gas or babies that have difficulty falling asleep, parents whose work may require constant travelling.
A. Homemakers - Product is designed to emulate the perfect experience for babies to relax and such, so they don't cry easily (newborns prefer conditions akin to those of a mother's womb, hence, the product is geared with functions(i.e the
B. people with premature babies/parents who have babies who suffer from reflux, colic and gas or babies that have difficulty falling asleep - Premature babies tend to suffer from colic and reflux, so the product was deigned to relieve this symptoms via the way the product is built. Additionally, the product is also comfortable for babies to sleep easily.
C. parents whose work may require constant travelling - In contrast to other portable cribs, this Babosuch is more durable and do not wear out easily. Also, the product can be bring anywhere and do not need a rocker.

3. What are some flaws in this product and how can they be improved?
Answer: The product, although innovative and ingenious, has been subject to controversy due to some reasons(generally 1 and 2).

Firstly, According to SIDS and Kids safe sleeping guidelines, parents should sleep babies on their backs from birth, not on their tummy or side regardless if the babies have reflux or not, and that tummy time should be on the floor and fully supervised.
Improvement: Although the product is meant to distract babies so that parents could do what they want peacefully, I believe that parents could have a schedule to tell them when they should have tummy time for babies while supervising them of course. By planning ahead, parents have better management of their time and are able to still do what they want. Retailers can tell this to their customers or include them on the product.

Secondly, The babies asleep on the Babocush run the risk of suffocation as they are face down and potentially unsupervised.
Improvement: Before buying the product, retailers should be expected to brief this to parents when putting babies to sleep on the device on the proper technique to do so so suffocation can be avoided.
Source for firstly and secondly; http://www.essentialbaby.com.au/baby/baby-products/safety-concerns-over-popular-baby-comfort-cushion-20160204-gmlk5s

Thirdly, the sides of the Babocush is wide open which may cause babies to fall.(personal opinion)
Improvement: A small "wall" should be built around the edges of the product to prevent fall.

Fourthly, the vibration and heartbeat functions are controlled by buttons on the device. Some parents may forget to on it when they go to the kitchen or something and may need to return. (personal opinion)
Improvement: The same function could be integrate as an app in phone so as to allow parents to monitor and control said functions. The product could also be built to "sense"that a baby have been placed on it(probably by adding a thermal sensor) to automatically activate the functions.

4. How would you modify this product for another group of users?
Answer: Due to this amazing device, the same device(without modification) can be used in hospitals for Neonatal intensive care unit(NICU) especially since the device work well for premature babies or those that are 0 months old.
For people with motion sickness, if we know how the device prevent reflux, we can apply it to chairs in cars or planes to prevent people form feeling uncomfortable and vomit.
The heartbeat sound device/unit can also be used when conducting operations. Some research shows that a human heartbeat creates a calming effect on individuals, hence, when a person undergoing surgery or operations feel nervous or scared, maybe the heartbeat device can soothe them. It was created by
Kerry harry who faced the problem of her child crying and her quest to create the best baby cushion chair thing. Apart from that;
1. We can also better understand ways to pacify a baby and emulate the perfect conditions to do so. The same concept and materials can be further used for some other problems.
2.

1. The product is trying to address the issue of colic, gas, and reflux symptoms experienced by babies.

2. The users are parents and/or nannies. New parents might not have enough knowledge/experience relieving their child from symptoms of colic, gas, and reflux which is where this product might come in useful. The users are also the babies as this product is aimed to help relieve babies with colic, gas, and reflux symptoms.

3. The product is very big and probably heavy which might make it hard to bring around the house. This might be an inconvenience to users (parents/nannies) if they want to move the product. A possible improvement could be to make the product more mobile by allowing the product to be disassembled safely so that users can detach the product into smaller and lighter parts to move around safely.

1. What issue do you think this product is trying to address?

The issue that this product is trying to address is to relieve the symptoms of colic gas and reflux for babies which helps the babies to sleep.

2. Who are the users in context and how does this product meet the users’ needs?

The users are babies or infants and their caretakers and the product aims to meet the needs of them through several ways. Firstly, it aims to help the babies relax and stay soothed to give them a better sleep. It caters to the needs of the caretakers through helping them to put the baby to sleep and keep them from waking up. This will give the caretakers time to run errands or do chores and not have to take time to ease and pacify the baby.

3. What are some flaws in this product and how can they be improved?

One flaw may be the high retail price and high production cost as this is a sophisticated piece of technology and may be hard to mass produce.

Improvement: the product’s design can be simplified or made using more economical materials such as plastics which are commonplace and cheap.

Another flaw is that the product is big and therefore can only be used in the house or in one place and cannot be transported as easily as say a stroller.

Improvement: the products design can include wheels and a battery or may be even designed to fold which would make it much more portable.

4. How would you modify this product for another group of users?

I could modify the product by giving it a basket and an auto rock feature that detects a weight on it so that pets may also be able to use the product as a place to relax or rest.

5. If this product was presented as a case study, what finding(s) can you learn from it?

I can learn that a lot of hard work and planning goes into designing a product that serves such a simple function.

Eugene and Renkai 08/19

1. The issue that this product is trying to address is the symptoms of colic, gas and reflux experienced by babies, which prevents babies from sleeping soundly.
2. The users of the product are babies and the product meets the users' needs by simulating the actions of an adult rocking the baby to sleep, which is replaced by vibrations and simulation of the sounds of heartbeats. This calms the baby down and allows the baby to sleep, while adults do not have to spend time coaxing the baby to sleep.
3. While this product is perfect for busy adults who do not have time to coax their babies to sleep, it can however hinder the fostering of the parent-child relationship as it is the basic nature of human parents to look out for their babies as they sleep to foster the sense of responsibility and even the connection between the baby and the parent. In the long term, adults may grow so dependent of the product that if met with a similar situation but without the product, they may not know how to deal with the situation appropriately and as a result cause a mess. This can be prevented with functions of the product not readily there(e.g.s manual work for clicking of buttons to set different modes of the product) so that parents will still be involved while the product coaxes the baby to sleep.
4. There can be larger versions of the product suited for teenagers and adults, because babies are not the only users who sleep better with coaxes. After a long day at work, all that the adult or teenager wants to do is just to take a rest on something comfortable, especially somethings with a cushion so as to rest their lethargic bodies, and with larger versions of this product, it can replace massage chairs like ogawa or osim.
5. Users' needs(very specific and detailed needs) need to be considered and every little aspect that belongs to the users' life has to be incorporated in the product(say the heartbeat that babies recognize has been incorporated into the product so that babies won't feel stranger to the product when they rest on it, and hence they will rest more readily).
