Mr. Utecht did a great job in explaining FAIL (First Attempt In Learning). In a nutshell, he informs us that learning is the first step in understanding a concept or piece of information. During this procedure, we sometimes fail, analyze why we failed, and overcome our failures. This can happen repeatedly, but we always learn and take away something from the experience. He questions the educational system on how we can change the grading system to focus more on attempts at learning as opposed to mastery or proficiency.

This topic is important because it describes the growth vs proficiency debate. Where proficiency is focused on the competence and mastery of a subject; Growth focuses on the journey of education and how far the student has came in their development towards proficiency.

This topic of conversation is going to have lasting effect on me because I'm going to become a Special Education teacher. I don't believe proficiency alone will be the best method in determining the understanding of concepts in my field. The "Growth" approach makes more sense when working with students who are already struggling with school because of their disability. Knowing the student, where they started out at, and what they are accomplishing will allow my team to analyze and further their education appropriately and effectively at the sutdent's pace.
