Nine inch nails, a project led by Trent Reznor which is known for popularising a genre known as Industrial. This genre combines elements of heavy metal, rock and electronic music to create harsh yet propulsive rhythm. The monumental success of this project led to a whole new wave of artists resonating with this sound and implementing it themselves. If it were not for Trent, industrial music would have been much more niche than it is today (The metal. 2021, June 17). and we would not have bands like Death Grips using elements of heavy metal and electronic music in a new way.

Autechre is an electronic music duo that first got a small fanbase in the underground music scene in the early 90s. They were known for their incredibly unique music that blended dance, techno, electronica and ambient music (New York Times. 2020, Oct 13). Zach Hill, the producer and drummer for Death Grips stated Autechre as one of their influences and this is undoubtedly noticeable when comparing both of these groups' music. Although Autechre is not an Industrial group, their experimentation with electronic music has had an effect on the way Death Grips approaches their instrumentals.

Jimi Hendrix was an incredibly influential and versatile guitar player, blending genres such as rock, jazz, soul, psychedelic rock and blues. Vocalist of Death Grips MC Ride has stated that Jimi Hendrix is one of his favourite artists. Although Death Grips uses synths similar to Jimi's fuzz heavy guitar tones on a lot of their tracks, we can also consider the cryptic lyrics that MC Ride uses as also influenced by Jimi's surreal lyricism. The two also talk about similar themes in their music such as Drugs and Politics.

Death Grips took a while for me to get into because I was not exposed to such experimental music at that age but eventually their mysterious persona and genre-bending sound hooked me in. Their most critically acclaimed album "The Money Store" and other albums such as "The Powers That B" speak to a primal part of the human experience that not many other artists have been able to portray so viscerally. This group has made Industrial one of my favourite genres and I always find myself using elements of this genre in my own music.

Brian Eno revolutionised ambient music. He created dense and detailed atmospheres for listeners to step in, blending elements of rock, electronic and classical music. All genres that are present in the music Björk makes. Brian Eno is called the Godfather of ambient music for pioneering this genre in the 70s (Duxson, E. 2022, December 21). Although Björk leans towards the alternative-pop or more specifically trip-hop style, her production on more personal projects such as "Vespertine" heavily borrow from traits of ambient music to help immerse the listener into the world of the album.

Kate Bush is one of the most successful alternative pop artists of the 80s, blending art pop, progressive pop and experimental music into something more suitable for the mainstream audience at the time (Jaxsta. 2022, June 28). Björk has cited Kate Bush as an influence and this is very easy to notice in her instrumentals as they almost feel like an expansion of art pop and experimental pop in a way that can be traced back to Bush. Her eccentric and unique vocal style is also something she has in common with Bush.

Massive Attack was a trip-hop band formed in the late 80s that blended electronic, dance and hip-hop. The influence of Massive Attack can be seen in Björk's later works such as Volta where she even got acclaimed hip-hop producer Timbaland to produce the album. Their unique approach to electronic music has been carried out in Björk's work, blended with other genres such as classical and art pop. Björk has been prominent in the underground trip-hop scene, collaborating with artists such as Tricky, however, Massive Attack is the group that sort of birthed the genre.

Björk is one of my favourite artists due to her originality and experimentation with niche genres. I was fascinated by the production of "Vespertine" and "Homogenic", the way she blended classical, electronic and art-pop was something I had never heard before and the fact that it was done in a way that sounded like this genre had existed forever left an impact on me. Her music is fascinating and fresh to this day. Her use of electronic music and classical music is something I try to implement with my own work.

The Pixies are one of the most influential bands of all time, they are credited for laying the groundwork for grunge music that would later come into fruition with Nirvana (Sullivan, J. 2018, September 28). Radiohead's frontman Thom Yorke has credited Pixies as one of their influences and this can be heard on their first two alternative rock/brit-pop albums Pablo Honey and The Bends. A lot of the guitar riffs, song structures and lyrics were heavily influenced by The Pixie's take on alternative rock. Radiohead experimented with the genre in their later work.

Aphex Twin is one of the most important figures in contemporary electronic music, blending genres like jungle, techno and ambient music into his work (Edmunds, J. 2021, April 16). Radiohead's most forward-thinking albums "Kid A" saw a huge departure from their alternative rock style, the ambitious album blended electronica, experimental rock, post-rock, alternative rock, post-prog, ambient, electronic rock, art rock, and art pop. A lot of the sample work and drum machines were similar to that of Aphex Twins and the band adopted this sound for albums after this such as "Amnesiac" and in the Thom Yorke's solo career.

Talking Heads was one of the most experimental bands in the 80s rock scene, blending punk, art rock and funk into their left-leaning lyrics. Radiohead got their name from a Talking Heads song and their lyrics are similar. This is especially prominent on the album "hail to the thief" which discusses left-leaning political ideologies which is very common in David Byrne from Talking Heads writing. The bands seem to share a hatred for totalitarianism and a distaste for kakistocracies. Talking Heads experimentation undoubtedly influenced Radiohead as every album the band releases takes new risks.
