When you go to the higher levels of mandarin, it gets harder, especially when reading. When you use mandarin in the future, there won't be any pinyin. Learning to read a lot of characters can really help you in the future, especially if your job requires you to speak mandarin. Chinese not being able to speak or read Chinese can make others think down upon you. Besides, if you ace this class, you can get credits for high school! You may have slacked last year, but this year is the year that counts for high school!

If you think you aren’t doing well, think of something you know in mandarin (probably just ni hao 你好 but that not the point) and be proud of your progress. Yes, I know, studying can be a pain. But, you just gotta do what you have to do.  Because afterward, you can go to your friends (if you have) and start speaking to them in Chinese. Hmmmmm, yes that will be nice. Watch them get all confused and stuff. Learning how to speak or understand mandarin is really help, like, you can just randomly go on the street and randomly understand native Chinese speakers... but the old ladies are probably just talking about the weather is or how their husband is a pain. And you can also surprise those older generations that you know mandarin and the younger generation is not all that bad:) and again, all these TED talk is just me trying to tell you that as long as you work hard and tried your best. You will ace it. Even if you didn’t ace it, so what? That’s probably not your strong point, your strong point might be I-dunno-what-you’re-good-at-I’m-so-sorry.
