Long Distance Friends

Meet Jessie Zhong, one of my best friends. To me Jessie represents long distance friendships, as she moved to Milpitas in Sophomore Year. I realized how important it is for both people to be committed in order to make something long distance work. This commitment will apply to me greatly when I go off to college and want to stay in contact with my high school friends.

The time when Esther and I almost died

At Esther's 18th birthday party, we decided to have a BBQ at a campsite in Saratoga. I got there first to help her set up everything and as we tried to set up the gas grill, the leftover propane in the air from our previous attempt lit the whole grill and tablecloth on fire. Luckily we had a box of water bottles that we reserved for the party and used those to extinguish the fire or else we would have been in major danger. Scared to use the gas grill, we switched to the old campfire method to cook our meat.

One of the things that impacted me the most this year was the people I met. I sometimes still cannot wrap my head around the fact that new friendships form even after we've known each other our whole lives. It's somehow bittersweet to start to become close with someone in your senior year, as every one is going to college in a couple months.

This is hands down the song that has stuck with me the most throughout these 4 years. Honestly, I'm not sure why this song resonates so deeply with me. I've never been in an abusive relationship or experienced anything discussed in the song but there's something about the lyrics and the tune.. the optimism, the despair, the complexity of relationships that reaches out to me.

Color Run

This year I developed a love for exercising, but particularly running. I ran two 10K's and got first place in both of them for my age division. Although this picture is of the Color Run at Great America, it signifies my passion towards running and treating my body better.

One of the things I have tried to incorporate more into my life this year is spontaneity. I have always been one who needed to plan everything out accordingly but I have found that sudden and random acts provide excitement and a sense of adventure, a good break from my mundane life. New Zealand New Years 2012

This trip was an eye opening experience. The people in New Zealand were all so laid back, and how could they not be when they live in a place that looks like heaven? I went on the trip with my mom, aunt, and two cousins and this trip was the one that solidified my relationship with my two cousins. Living on opposite sides of the world, it is always hard to communicate due to our distance and time difference. However, after this trip I have become extremely close to Katherine, constantly finding time to Skype with her when we are free and also talking to Kevin more when we see one another. This night, as seen in the picture, was magical and let me realize that I need to live life to the fullest.

New York Wax Museum

This summer I traveled to New York, Boston, and Vancouver with my cousins. It was an eye opening experience since I realized how different the east coast and west coast are. Here, everyone goes to Starbucks but in the east coast everyone goes to Dunkin Donuts. It was a fun culture shock and while I loved the bustling streets in New York and the plethora of activities to do there, the weather affirmed my need to stay in California for college.

Noodle Fests

When I first joined my new group in Sophomore Year, I met a girl named Julia Lee. She had just transferred from Korea and didn't know much English and so it was difficult to communicate with her in the beginning. Even though it was hard to communicate with her through language, we found a way to express ourselves through food and songs. We made an event called Noodle Fest, which we celebrated by eating sushi and noodles on days of dances since none of us really wanted to go. With the event came a dance and a song as well, both of which were called Noodle Fest. Although cheesy, it was through this medium that we were able to become closer.

Holly is hands down one of the people I can truly trust with everything. We think alike, act alike, and even like the same things. Out of all of my friends, however, she is the one that took the longest to become close to. We've known each other our whole lives but it was Junior year that we truly became best friends. I am thankful that we had so many classes together where we only knew one another because that is ultimately what drove us to become closer. This picture was probably taken when we were just starting to become closer, which is why it is so important to me. I know that she's one of the people I want to be close to for the rest of my life.

Gentlemen's Dignity

I once watched a drama called Gentlemen's Dignity that talked about four middle aged men who have been best friends since high school. It has always been my dream to have a friendship as deep as those four characters and so I gave our group the nickname: Gentlemen's Dignity. It's composed of Esther, Caroline, Jennie, and I and this corner in the library is where we go to hang out whenever we just want some bonding time.
